MEMORANDUM
TO: Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation Superintendent
FROM: John W. Stutzman, Recreation Supervisor J
DATE: April 27, 2010
SUBJ: 2010 Easter Egg Candy Hunt Evaluation
S
The Chanhassen Park and Recreation Department's Easter Egg Candy Hunt was held on
Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Chanhassen Recreation Center. There were 196 kids
registered for this event. The total number of participants was slightly down compared to
the 2009 total. There were 106 pre- registered participants and 90 registered the day of
the event. I believe the largest factor in the lower attendance was not being allowed to
distribute the program flyer in all of the schools due to the districts having a paperless
initiative this year. While many other marketing initiatives were developed, none were as
effective as the school flyers have been in years past.
This was the first time Kid Power with Rachael provided the musical entertainment. She
did a great job and is very easy to work with. The crowd responded positively and there
were many kids right up front dancing.
Volunteers provide such a great service at these types of events. The Chanhassen High
School Key Club was a tremendous asset with set -up, clean -up, candy distribution, and
wearing the bunny costume. They will be asked to help again next year. I also
recommend that we invite the Chaska High School Key Club to participate as there are
plenty of duties to keep both clubs busy. City employees were also extremely helpful in
running this event as many of them stepped up and volunteered their time as well.
This year's event was held at the Chanhassen Recreation Center. The entertainment was
held inside the gymnasium. The candy hunt was held outside in a designated area on the
soccer fields north of the Recreation Center. Parents and onlookers surrounded the area
and had good visibility of the candy hunt. Participants were divided into three age
groups, 4 and under, 5 -8 and 9 -I2, creating an environment that is safe for all
participants. In the future, I recommend that we explore ways to move the Easter Egg
Candy Hunt to City Center Park. This central location in the city could help to increase
attendance and visibility for the event.
In keeping with our goal of providing high quality programs, we again used colored
posters made by city hall staff for all aspects of the event, i.e. coloring contest categories,
sponsorship thank you posters, registration table signs, and directional signs. To build on
the success of this event, I am willing to look at new format ideas. This may ensure
consistent and increased attendance.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 2010
➢ Explore options to move the event to City Center Park.
➢ Once again, do not list the start times for the candy hunt.
➢ Continue having the Key Club and other volunteers set up the morning of the event.
➢ Consider replacing the entertainment portion of the event with a prize giveaway for all event
participants.
➢ Continue handing out candy bags to kids as they leave the registration table, giveaway tickets could
be placed in the bags for easy distribution.
➢ Continue to encourage pre- registration, but allow walkups the day of the event.
➢ Increase visibility and decoration of the photo area for Easter Bunny.
