The third annual ChanJam Concert was held Friday, April 16 at the Chanhassen
Recreation Center. It was another successful event! Paid admissions totaled 200.
Additionally, 35 band members stayed and supported all of the bands; which
brought the total attendance to 235 people. Attendance was down this year,
which staff attributes to two extremely popular bands from Chaska High School
graduating last year and not returning.
A total of eight bands participated, representing four of the high schools that serve
Chanhassen, including Chanhassen, Chaska, Minnetonka, and Holy Family
Catholic High Schools. The winning band, declared by a panel of judges, was
Silence Only Comes on Tuesday from Minnetonka High School. They have been
invited to play on July 3rd, opening for Casablanca Orchestra. The judge's panel
was a new component that was composed of two local musicians, Joe Scott and
Lauren Redpath, and Commissioner Tom Kelly. Staff will continue to evaluate
the effectiveness of this process for next year. I recommend that we accept band
applications from all five schools, but focus a majority of the advertising on the
three larger schools with greater participation numbers.
Culver's of Chanhassen was contracted to serve food. The food service was more
popular because of its new location in the hallway, increased marketing, the early
start time, and an intermission. Culver's was very easy to work with and happy to
be a part of the event.
Dan Scott and Partners in Entertainment provided the sound, lighting and staging.
They are easy to work with and very affordable. Using first-rate equipment, they
did a great job in providing a professional show. I would highly recommend
asking them back in the future.
People were encouraged to bring an item for the food shelf to save $1 on
admission. This was a nice addition and the 47 items collected were donated to
the local CAP Agency. I would recommend doing this again in the future.

Overall, the event continues to be a wonderful way to reach out to our teenage residents. In
addition, this has proven to be an event that is fun for the whole family. This program is a fine
example of staff's goals to provide high quality recreation programs. I highly recommend
continuing this program in future years.
RECOMMENDA TIONS FOR 2011
. Continue to have only one food vendor and place them in the hallway for increased visibility.
. Look at the possibility of relocating the event to one of the theatres at Chanhassen High
School. The cost associated the theatre rental should be comparable to the current stage rental.
. While word of mouth continues to be the best form of marketing, continue to look for new
ways to reach out to families to advertise this event.
. Invite both the Chanhassen and Chaska Key Clubs to help with ticket sales and general event
management.
. Evaluate the judging process to determine the winners of the contest. If judges are used in the
future, look for ways to involve them in the show and put more value on the audience reaction
in the scoring.
. Continue to invite Dave Ryan as MC for the event. While he was unavailable for ChanJam' 10,
perhaps he will be available in the future. If he is unavailable, look at students who may be
suitable for the MC position. This position is essential to keeping the crowd engaged for the
whole evening.
. I recommend that 10 bands be the capacity for the event.
. Continue to have two CSOs and one deputy for security.
