SUBJ: Chanhassen Senior Commission Goals and Objectives for 1997
• Senior Commission Goals and Objectives for 1997
1. Identify issues facing senior citizens and present them with possible solutions and
recommendations to the City Council.
2. Congregate Dining - Meals On Wheels: Announce The Program, Recruit Volunteers, Hire
a staff person, and make seniors aware that the program will be available in September of
1997. The Commission directed staff to prepare a list of items needed in the kitchen
(dishes, utensils, etc.) with prices. If a senior wishes to make financial contributions toward
an item, they would be able to do so. This will also reduce the financial burden on the City.
After Congretate Dining is established, the service will be expnded to include Meals On
Wheels. Volunteer drivers will be needed to deliver meals to homes.
3. Senior Center: Staff was directed to evaluate the need for potential expansion of the
existing space. With the start up of congregate dining, the Senior Center could become over
crowded. The area located west of the kitchen is unfinished. If the need presents itself after
congregate dining begins, the Commission wishes to know the City Council's reaction to
seniors using a portion of this space to meet their needs.
4. Transportation: Ongoing. Staff was directed to work with Southwest Metro Transit to
provide service to medical establishments as an alternative to CART. Southwest Metro
Transit has establishing a circulator bus within the City. A link between Centennial Hill

Senior Residence and the circulator bus is recommended. Staff was also directed to
• investigate grants for the purchase of a 15 passenger mini bus.
5. Information And Referral / Carver County Senior Information Line: The Senior Center was
recently rewarded a new computer and software from United Way. This was made possible
through the efforts of Kara Wickenhauser. Staff was directed to advertise the program and
make people aware of the availability of the service.
6. Assisted Living: Recommend to proceed with a city wide survey to determine if there is a
need.
7. Educate future generations of seniors: Increase awareness of the opportunities and
challenges that face seniors in Chanhassen. Create a subcommittee with two members from
the Senior Commission, two members from the Advisory Board, and two members form
the Senior Information Line. The subcommittee will organize presentations and present it
to the community and schools.
8. Communication With Neighboring Senior Centers and Community Education:
A. Coordination Of Events.
B. Transportation Coordination With Other Senior Centers and Community Education.
9. Senior Parking At Public Buildings: Ongoing. The Senior Commission shall contact local
businesses and request the installation of the signs at their parking lots. Also, a sign should
• be posted at City Hall upper parking lot, library, and the Recreation Center.
10. Support Senior Expo.
11. Support:
