RE: Light Rail Trail Extension
In conjunction with extending the Light Rail Trail (LRT) into Chaska, would you
also consider installing a bridge across Great Plains Blvd. (T. H.101). There are very
steep hills on both sides of T.H. 101 and it is also very difficult to see traffic approaching
on T.H. 101. 1 believe there would be sufficient clearance between the roadway and the
proposed bridge to accommodate vehicle traffic.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Concept
Describe the project you plan to do.
I will be upgrading the Carver Beach Park doing the following:
• The biggest part of the project will be to remove the old wood playground border that is a
safety hazard to the children playing on the play structure. The 12" deep pea rock will be
shoveled back away from the existing 23' 1" x 27' 1" rotting and splitting timber border.
• Re -build the playground border using recycled plastic timbers provided by the City of
Chanhassen. This will include preparing the base, measuring and cutting the recycled timbers
to fit, and then drilling, and spiking them in place. Finally we will be moving the pea rock
back in place, this will finish off the project.
• Provide erosion control to the hillside leading down to the park with 3" to 6" of new mulch.
The dimension is about 80 feet up the hill by approx. 30 feet wide. I will need to research
and procure the mulch. Funding will come from local corporations.
• Remove and plant three new trees near the shore. The new trees will be researched and
provided by the city to assure diseased resistance, and ensure they provide adequate
erosion control along the lake.
• Stain the wood handrail next to the stairs to ensure its longevity.
• Clean and stain the two park benches (cleaning them with sandpaper and brushes) to
prevent them from decaying.
What group will benefit?
The residents of Chanhassen and surrounding communities that utilize this public park space.
This project will take place at Carver Beach Park located on Lotus Lake in the City of Chanhassen.
My project will be of benefit to the group because:
The project will be a benefit to the community because it will improve the safety around the play
structure, and improve the overall appearance of the park.
The concept was discussed with my unit leader on Saturday, September 10, 2010.
The project concept was discussed with Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director, 952 - 227 -1129
of Chanhassen on Tuesday, August 24, 2010.
PLANNING DETAILS
Plan your work by describing the present condition, the method, materials to be used, project
helpers, and a time schedule for carrying out. Describe any safety hazards you might face and
explain how you will ensure the safety of those carrying out the project.
1. Present Condition
The boards around the play structure are rotting and cracking creating a hazard for the children
playing on the structure.
The benches are faded in color and have moss growing on them, putting them at risk for decay.
The hillside is washing out so we will be putting mulch down to try to prevent the erosion and slow
the water from entering the lake.
This is a picture of the three dead trees which need to be removed and replaced with 2 new trees
2. Method
• Play Structure — The pea rock will be shoveled back to the middle of the structure allowing us
to remove the timbers. The timbers will be removed using crowbars and hammers. New
recycled timbers will be installed and the pea rock returned.
• Benches —The city has requested that the benches be sanded to smooth the surface and
remove growths. So, we will hand sand the benches and apply a new sealing stain to the
surface using brushes
• Railing — the railing leading down to the beach will be stained to match to benches.
• Trees —The existing trees will be removed by way of chain saw. New trees will be dug in
using spades.
• Hillside Erosion —Mulch will be delivered and we will use wheelbarrows to move the mulch
into place.
3. Materials
• 6 — 8' recycled timbers plus 2 extra
• 22- 12' recycled timbers plus 2
• 350 yards of mulch to cover the hill
• Two new trees to replace the 3 dead ones
• 1 gallon of stain for benches and hand railing (color to be determined by the city of
Chanhassen )
• Spikes to hold timbers together
• Sand paper to clean benches
• Rubber gloves for staining.
4. Project Helpers
• Hill Side Erosion — 6 helpers
• Play Ground Structure — 4 helpers
• Benches — 4 helpers (2 per bench)
• Remove and plant the new trees — 2 helpers
• Railing Stain — 2 helpers
5. Time Schedule
• 1 would like to get people assembled at 7:30 am to explain the jobs and get everyone
organized, and to start the project by 8:00 am...
• We will hopeful be done around 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm.
6. Safety Hazards
• Potentially injures from the removal of the splintering wooden border and from incorrect
use of the stain
7. Safety Plans
• Adequate safety precautions will be taken when removing the wooden beams gloves and
safety glasses along with long clothing will be recommended.
