APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Bobbie Headla moved to approve the minutes. Jean
Mancini seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion was carried.
VISITOR PRESENTATION: Mary Jane Klingelhutz presented a concern about the
possible development of the property located east of Lake Susan and east of Highway 101
(Lake Susan Apartment Homes). She is concerned about the traffic levels that this
development would create, as well as the type of housing that would be built. Mary Jane
feels that one of the three proposed buildings should be considered for assisted living for
seniors. Mary Jane asked for the support of the Senior Commission by passing a
resolution and forwarding it to the City Council. Chairperson Howard explained that the
Senior Commission recently met with the City Council to discuss their goals for the year.
The City Council is aware of the Senior Commission's position regarding housing. She
also stated that the commission receives direction from the City Council and not the other
way around. It was suggested that Mary Jane approach the City Council on her own with
the support of other residents who are not on the Senior Commission. It was also stated
that if a commissioner wishes to attend the Council meeting and speak regarding this
project, then they shall do so as residents of the City and not as Senior Commissioners2
Sharmin explained that the City sets its requirements and standards in advance. We then
compare any proposal that is submitted to the City against these standards. If a proposal
meet city ordinances and requirements, then the City has to approve the proposal.
Sharmin invited Bob Generous, Senior Planner down to the meeting to answer any
questions regarding the Villages on the Pond development. Bob said the proposed plans
call for 3 buildings of 165 units to be considered affordable housing. To meet the
Metropolitan Council standards the apartments would be available for rent at roughly
$600.00 a month. Bob suggested that if there were any other additional concerns or
questions that the seniors attend the Monday, June 28th City Council meeting at 6:30pm.
VERBAL UPDATE ON MEETING WITH CITY COUNCIL: City Council work
session with the Senior Commission on Monday, June 7th went smoothly. The main
discussion revolved around the need for Senior Assisted Living and Senior Housing in
general. Certain pieces of property within the City that are being reviewed for
development were discussed.
CONGREGATE DINING & MEALS ON WHEELS: Numbers for the Congregate
Dining Program continue to remain low. Meals on Wheels numbers are holding steady
at 10 to 14 meals a day served.
UPDATE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES: The Senior Awareness Film was
presented to the Senior Advisory Board with feedback following. The SAB enjoyed the
film. The only suggestions that were made to improve the film, was to update a few of
the pictures, add some more activity pictures and format the film onto video cassette. The
Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast on
Saturday, July 3rd from 9:30am - 11:00am. Upcoming events and trips include;
Minnesota Zoo, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres "Good News", St. Cloud Trip, Boat Cruise
& Northwest Fur Co., and Lake Susan Picnic. Fall and early winter trip planning will be
completed in mid-August.
UPDATE ON MAAA GRANT APPLICATIONS: The only grant money that is
available for year 2000 falls in the category of Disease Control.
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: Sherol Howard will be completing her term
as a Carver County Senior Advisory Board Member and will not reapply. Sherol feels
that there should be representation from Chanhassen and suggested that a Senior
Commission member apply for the vacancy. Tom Faust and Bobbie Headla expressed
interest. Meetings are held every other month and are held in the Carver County
Courthouse. Kara will order new name plates for Senior Commissioners Mel Kurvers,
Tom Faust and Jean Mancini. Jean Mancini resigned from the Beautification Committee.
The Senior Commission will be in the 4th of July parade. Two to three convertibles will
be donated from Lenzen Chevrolet in Chaska.
ADJOURNMENT: Jean Mancini moved to adjourn the meeting. Tom Faust seconded
the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Prepared and Submitted by Kara Wickenhauser, Chanhassen Senior Center Coordinator.
