REGULAR MEETING
July 16, 1999
Chairwomen Sherol Howard called the meeting to order at 9:40am.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Sherol Howard, Mel Kurvers, Tom Faust, Jean Mancini, Albin
Olson, Dale Geving and Bobbie Headla.
MEMBERS ABSENT: None.
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmin A1-Jaff, Senior Planner and Kara Wickenhauser, Senior
Center Coordinator.
VISITORS PRESENT: None.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Commissioner Bobbie Headla moved to approve the
agenda. Commissioner Tom Faust seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the
motion was carried. Sharmin A1-Jaff added the Senior Commission budget as an
additional item to the agenda.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Tom Faust moved to approve the minutes. Mel
Kurvers seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion was carried.
One correction was made in the Senior Housing text. The percentage of the housing units
intended in the Lake Susan project to be affordable is 20% - 33 of 165 units.
VISITOR PRESENTATION: None.
CONGREGATE DINING & MEALS ON WHEELS: Numbers for the Congregate
Dining Program remain steady. Meals on Wheels numbers are holding steady at 10 to 14
meals a day served. A discussion was held in regards to the quality of food provided.
Several complaints were made about the taste of the food. What can we do to improve
the food?
UPDATE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES: Upcoming trips include; Pipestone
Overnight Trip 7/30 - 7/31, Boat Cruise & Fur Company Tour 8/03/99
and the Lake Susan Picnic on 8/13/99. Registration and refund policy was discussed.
Registration money for trips are only returned when the trip is canceled by the Senior
Center. If the registrant cancels after the registration deadline he or she can check the
waiting list to see if their tickets can be replaced. If not the registration money is non-
refundable, except for a $3.00 administrative fee.
SENIOR COMMISSION BUDGET: Budget was approved as written, except with a
few additions. The Senior Commission would like a budget line for beautification of the
Senior Center (flowers).
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: Senior Commissioner Tom Faust discussed
some issues regarding senior assisted living. Tom and Mel visited with Chaska Auburn
Manor Assisted Living Director and he was very impressed with their operations. Tom
suggested that we keep in touch with Chaska Auburn Manor. Tom also suggested that we
approach the City Council with a written letter expressing the interest in assisted living
for seniors. Sharmin reminded the Senior Commission that the City Council is in support
of this issue and is fully aware of how the Senior Commission feels in regards to senior
assisted living. Sharmin also reminded the Senior Commission that the City Council will
be performing a 2000 survey for housing / senior issues. Tom also discussed the manner
in which the senior assisted living petition was handled and distributed. In the future the
Senior Center will deny all requests to post and distribute any petitions. The Senior
Center is a place of recreation and not a place of solicitation. Other concerns about
Senior Commission Committee work was also expressed by Tom. Tom feels strongly
that each committee member should be entitled to do their own Work without interruption
of other Commissioners.
ADJOURNMENT: Albin Olson moved to adjourn the meeting. Jean Mancini seconded
the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
