SUBJ: American Community Survey — Census Data
Demographic information allows the City to both track where the community has
been and look forward to where we are going. Staff has assembled a few data points
of information regarding the residents and household characteristics to facilitate
discussion. Once the census data is available, staff will bring it back for additional
review and discussion.
Planning &
Census data, which is collected every ten years, attempts to count every person in

the country and provides a snapshot of the U.S. population. The American

services. Like the decennial census long form, all ACS estimates for demographic,

social, economic, and housing characteristics come from a sample. Rather than

every day and summarizes it over one, three, and five -year periods. The provision

HOUSING
From 1970 to 2010, housing has grown almost 600 percent increasing from 1,454 units to 8,324
units. The percentage of ownership has increase from 68 percent to 85 percent, while the proportion
of rental housing has decreased from 25 percent to 11 percent. While the majority of households
occupied are by persons 35 — 54, representing 56.2 percent of the households, the senior population
ages 54 — 75+ are becoming a significant proportion of the households at 31.5 percent.
IMPLICATIONS
While there will continue to be a growth in the number of housing units, the change in the
demographic makeup of the community may lead to other changes:
• Reduce follow -up housing buyers
• Change in housing preferences
• Need for alternate housing styles
• Need for housing maintenance assistance or programs
• Change in school population and utilization
• Increase in senior programs
• Healthcare
• Economic changes — extended employment (due to the great recession)
• Labor skills /historic knowledge loss as Baby Boomers retire
• Transit
