2009 04 17 SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING APRIL 17, 2009 Chairman Robinson called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. MEMBERS PRESENT : Curt Robinson, Fred Prinz, Barbara Nevin, Virginia Prior, Pat McGough, Carol Buesgens, and Charlie Robbins. MEMBERS ABSENT: None. STAFF PRESENT : Sharmeen Al-Jaff. VISITORS: Katy Boone, Carver County Public Health Planner. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Robbins moved, Commissioner McGough seconded the motion to approve the agenda. All . voted in favor and the motion carried APPROVAL OF MINUTES DATED MARCH 20, 2009: Commissioner Robbins moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner Nevin seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Commissioner Robbins nominated incumbent Chair Robinson to fill the position of Chair for another year. Commissioner Nevin seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried. Commissioner Prior nominated commissioner Nevin to serve another year as Vice Chair of the Senior Commission. Commissioner Prinz seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried. Chairman Robinson reappointed Commissioner Prior to the Senior Center Advisory Board as s TRANSIT: Chairman Robinson contacted Allan Herman to follow up on the volunteer drivers’ training/meeting. CART is still working on the merger. They will have a joint Scott-Carver meeting. Currently, the biggest challenge is informing their clientele of the changes. Allan hopes to have the drivers meeting in April. Chairman Robinson has provided rides for people that need transportation. SENIOR PARKING SIGNS: Commissioner Nevin reported that Life Time has not responded. Chairman Robinson is working with CVS. The American Bank complex has put up the sign. The License Center has not responded yet. The Senior Commission received an e-mail of the photo of the Senior Parking Sign. Senior Commission – Senior Advisory Board Ice-Cream Social- Music in the Park-July 30, 2009: Chairman Robinson reported that the Lions Club has agreed to donate $100.00. Commissioner Nevin reported that Janine will assist in the activity. Commissioner Robbins directed staff to investigate the need for a license to hand out ice-cream. 2009 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The Senior Commission recommended the goals be abbreviated. The 2009 goals are: 1. Recruit minimum of five volunteer drivers for CART to service Chanhassen residents. Spring 2010. 2. Create a focus group in the City of Chanhassen to work with students from the Center of Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public affairs, to study the trends of Baby Boomers in Chanhassen. This will allow the commission to identify future issues facing Senior Citizens and present them, with possible solutions and recommendations, to the City Council. 3. Educate future generations of seniors 4. Install a minimum of three Senior Parking at Public Buildings. SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: There will be no meeting on June 19, 2009 since this is the date of the Senior Picnic and some of the commissioners will either attend or serve at the picnic. Commissioners Prior and Robinson attended the Ridgeview Friends and Family Exhibition which was held on March 21, 2009 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at Safari Island in Waconia. ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Robbins moved to adjourn the meeting, Commissioner Nevin seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
