SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES
REGULAR MEETING
OCTOBER 20, 2009
Chairman Robinson called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT
: Curt Robinson, Fred Prinz, Virginia Prior, Carol
Buesgens, Pat McGough, and Charlie Robbins.
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Barbara Nevin.
STAFF PRESENT
: Sharmeen Al-Jaff.
VISITORS:
Katy Boone, Carver County Public Health Planner.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA:
Commissioner Prinz moved, Commissioner
Robbins seconded the motion to approve the agenda. All voted in favor and

the motion carried
APPROVAL OF MINUTES DATED AUGUST 21, 2009:
Commissioner
Prior moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner Prinz seconded the
motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
JOINT MEETING WITH THE SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD:
The
Senior Commission commented that the meeting was very well received.
Many advisory board members had positive feedback. The meeting took place
on September 8, 2009 at 9:30 a.m.
TRANSIT:
Katy Boone reported that there was a meeting which was
attended by representatives of CART to address recent problems with the
system. There were representatives from Carver County Board of
Commissioners as well as members of the communities where these problems
have occurred. The issues were attributed to growing pains and
communication.
FOCUS GROUP:
The focus group meetings will take place on October
26, 2009, at the Chanhassen Recreation Center (6:00 p.m. Session-Ages
45 to 53) and (7:00 p.m. session-Ages 54 to 63). The questions will
focus on Boomer-age residents and their needs and expectations to stay
in the city as they age. The focus groups would consist of city residents
born between 1946 and 1964 divided into two groups, the “Leading
Boomers” ages 54-63 and the “Trailing Boomers” ages 45-53. There
will be 6-10 participants in each group. The 60 minute discussion will
cover questions about housing, recreation, work and retirement,
community services, care giving responsibilities and plans for the future.
The Senior Commission members may not serve as part of the focus
group due to their intimate knowledge of issues facing the aging
population.
CARVER COUNTY SENIOR EXPO-THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2009.
8:00 A.M.-1:30 P.M.:
Due to the fact the expo will take place one day prior
to the next Senior Commission meeting, the meeting will be canceled.
Commissioners that signed up for the Expo include: Curt Robinson, Fred
Prinz, Virginia Prior, and Pat McGough, Barbara Nevin.
SENIOR PARKING SIGNS:
Commissioner Nevin reported that she is
currently working with the License Center asking them to install a “Senior
Parking” sign.
EDUCATION ON MATTERS CONCERNING SENIORS:
Katy Boone
reported that she received a notice for volunteer opportunities. Vista worker
is advertising the following:
AMERICORPS VISTA Members Receive:
Living allowance of $909 per month
Choice of a onetime end of service $4,725 educational award or $1,200
stipend
Health care benefits
Relocation expenses
Student loan forbearance or deferment
Potential child care assistance
AmeriCorps VISTA Service Training
Training in project management and volunteer leadership skills
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS:
The Commission was reminded
that the October 16, 2009 Senior Commission meeting will be canceled due to
the fact that it will fall one day after the Carver County Senior Expo.

Commissioner Prinz moved to adjourn the meeting,
Commissioner Buesgens seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the
motion carried.
