During this work session I would like commissioners to focus on a vision of what amenities you believe will bring value to our park and trail system. Take a few moments to page through the enclosed park master plans, focus on the ones you are familiar with. What are your priorities for the next five years? The existing park master plans may or may not meet your expectations. I would like the commission to identify what our priorities should be in the face of limited resources. As a community we manage one of the most attractive suburban park and trails systems in the state. What will make it better? This part of the CIP process is primarily a brainstorming exercise. Do not get caught up in number crunching just yet, that part of the process will enter the picture in the coming months. Making capital investments is one of the most rewarding parts of working at the local government level. Park and Recreation Commissioners work for the City Council acting as information gatherers. What improvements do your neighbors tell you are needed in your neighborhood park? How about the community parks or trails system? We all need to work together to ensure that wise investments of time and resources are made. Also attached to this cover memo you will find a park master plan project inventory. This list identifies potential capital investments that appear on the city's current park master plans. A few of the items listed do not appear on a plan but have been identified by a past council or commission as a desirable amenity. The dollar figure associated with each item is a staff estimate based upon general knowledge of this improvement. Actual costs of each item will vary upward or downward from these estimates. I look forward to working with the commission on this CIP process next week!
