The Chanhassen community prides itself on a quality park and trail system. Our basic guiding premise is that every resident will have access to the City's trail system and be located within V2 mile of a City park. The Bernardi property is located in one of our remaining "park deficient" areas. This area is generally defined by Bluff Creek on the north and east, Audubon Road on the west, and future Highway 312 on the south. The City's comprehensive plan allows for either public or private recreation amenities, or a combination thereof, in satisfying park and recreation needs. We look forward to working with Town and Country Homes on this exciting project! I have attached a copy of the Commission's upcoming agenda for your information. Sincerely, Park and Recreation Director C~ Todd Gerhardt, City Manager Kate Aanenson, Community Development Director Park and Recreation Commission G:\park\th\town and country The City of Chanhassen ,, A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a charming downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautilul parks. Kellie Makela and the playground staff coordinated the logistics of the parade. They did an excellent job making sure the parade ran smoothly. The Fire Department and the Carver County Sheriff's Department were of great assistance in helping to ensure a safe route for all involved. Animal Cracker Treats were handed out to all parade participants. Trade Fair The Chanhassei~ Chamber of Commerce Trade Fair had 39 participants this year. The Chamber had their own tent this year for the Trade Fair, which really seemed to work well. I would definitely recommend they do the same for next year. Kaptain Kirby Train Rides This is a great event for our young kids and families! The kids seem to have a wonderful time with this activity. I would recommend having the train rides again next year. Senior Center Open House From all reports, the open house was a success. This is a nice addition to our celebration and should be continued in the future. Face Painting/Caricatures These are popular activities and remain to be a success at our celebration. The City retained 20% of all sales with these activities. I would recommend continuing these activities for next year. I would also suggest adding additional caricaturists/face painters. Carnival Games The carnival games were a huge hit! The playground staff along with some volunteers operated the games. They did a wonderful job and were a huge asset to our celebration. We also had local Associations operate some carnival games. The City of Chanhassen · A growing community with clean lakes quality schools, a charming do,,,,ntovvn, thriving businesses, v,:inding trails, and beautiful parks A great place to live. work. and play. The lines were a little long at times so it would be nice to have a few more games available for people to choose from next year. The Medicine Show This is an entertaining group to have intermingle with the trade fair crowd before the Street Dance. I would definitely invite them back next year. Water Wars What a great couple of days for this attraction! Water Wars was extremely busy on Wednesday, July 3rd at City Center Park. However, they were not real busy on Thursday, July 4th at Lake Ann Park. We may want to consider a second Water Wars game at City Center Park, as the lines were extremely long at times. The City took in 15% of their two-day sales. I would recommend that we invite them back next year. Speedway Racing This attraction was once again extremely popular! There was a line around the track fight up until they closed down for the night. This is a great family event and involves very little setup. The City took in 15% of their total sales. I would invite them back next year if they were interested. Food and Beer Garden Overall, the food vendors had a very successful night. I would suggest that we add additional food vendors, as the lines were extremely long at times. The food selection seemed to be adequate but I would look at adding some new selections for next year. KRUSH This local band was a nice addition to this year's celebration. I think that most people attending thought it was great that we involved a local youth group in our event. The group used the main stage this year, which really seemed to work well. I would definitely recommend having them use the main stage again next year. Tae Kwon Do Demo Jeff Engel and his staff provided our audience with an entertaining demonstration. His students seemed to enjoy performing for our event and it is also a gmat opportunity for the City to promote our Tae Kwon Do program at the Rec. Center. I would invite them back again next year if they were interested. Pony Rides/Corral This seemed to be a very popular attraction. I would recommend having them back next year. The lines were quite lengthy at times so we may want to look at adding an additional pony ring next year. Basketball Free Throw Shooting Contest This event was also quite successful! We gave away trophies and basketballs to the winners in five different age categories. I would recommend running this event next year. Chalk It Up Contest This event was quite successful as well! It was a lot of fun to see the creativity that people use in drawing their designs. The contest had two categories most creative and most difficult, which was judged by Susan Marek. I would recommend running this event again next year. Street Dance What a great performance! I think that everybody at the celebration enjoyed their show. Once again we rented the staging for the band, which really seems to work well. I would definitely recommend renting the stage again next year and booking CBO. JULY 4TM Adult Fishing Contest There were a total of 44 participants registered in this year's contest. Everyone that participated seemed to have a good time. The entry fee for the contest was $10. Every participant that registered also won a door prize. I would recommend offering this event again next year, as it is a nice activity to offer our adult population. Kid's Fishing Contest A total of 75 kids participated in this year's fishing festival. All kids received a grab bag with fishing items. We also gave away trophies and other prizes to the winner's of the largest fish, longest fish and smallest fish in two different age categories. The contest was run by Charlie Eiler and by our playground staff. Sand Sculpture Contest There were some very creative entries this year! The contest was run and judged by Kellie Makela and the rest of the playground staff. With the amount of time and energy people put into their sculptures we should look at increasing the prizes for next year. This is fun activity to add to the celebration and I would include it again in next year's celebration. Treasure Hunt An adult found the medallion at about 11:30 a.m. after the second clue was given. This is a fun and simple event and should be included in next year's celebration. The clue's were organized by Gina Carlson she did a wonderful job putting the clues together. Hula Hoop/Limbo Contest & Duck Pond Our playground staff ran these contests. We had a difficult time getting people to participate in these events. I would recommend we do not continue running these events next year. Fireworks This year's fireworks were again contracted through Melrose Pyrotechnics. I thought they put on an excellent display. The staff at Melrose continues to do a great job coordinating all the logistics of the display. I would definitely look at having Melrose Pyrotechnics do our show again next year. Suggestions for 2003 1. Look at adding new and exciting activities. 2. Look at adding more family orientated games/activities. 3. Possibly do our last display add in the Chanhassen Villager in color. 4. Get OSHA approved vests for people directing traffic before the fireworks. 5. Possibly buy new signs and banners for around town. 6. Get one more roll off dumpster next year for the 3ra of July. 7. Block Audobon Rd. after the fireworks are complete this will allow us to keep traffic moving down to Galpin Blvd. CITYOF CHANHASSEN 7700 Market Boulevard PO Box 147 Chanhassen, MN 55317 Administration Phone: 952.227.1100 Fax: 952.227.1110 Building Inspections Phone: 952.227.1180 Fax: 952.227.1190 Engineering Phone: 952.227.1 t60 Fax: 952.227.1170 Finance Phone: 952.227.1140 Fax: 952.227.1110 Park & Recreation Phone: 952.227.1120 Fax: 952.227.1110 Recreation Center 2310 Coulter Boulevard Phone: 952.227.1400 Fax: 952.227,1404 Planning & Natural Resources Phone: 952.227.1130 Fax: 952.227.1110 Public Works 1591 Park Road Phone: 952.227.1300 Fax: 952.227.1310 Senior Center Phone: 952.227.1125 Fax: 952.227.1110 Web Site www. ci.chanhassen.mn,us MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: Todd Hoffrnan, Park and Recreation Director JelTy Ruegemer, Recreation Superintendent DATE: July 19, 2002 SUB J: Fall Softball League The City of Chanhassen will be offering a Men's Fall Softball League again this year at Lake Ann Park.
