RE: Park & Rec Commission comments
Dear Cindy,
Thank you for your e-mail note concerning the 4th of July celebration.
The operation of the parade is coordinated by a volunteer committee
independent of the City. I know the idea about moving the parade to the
morning is a common request. One reason for the current schedule is to
allow the Waconia band time to get out of Delano after their morning
parade. The Waconia band has been the most requested entertainment
talents in the parade. A time switch would bump them from the schedule.
Another reason for the current time is to allow the parade to fit in
between the morning and evening activities at Lake Ann. Regarding the
need for more "local" parade entries and less politicians - the
community is in charge on this one. Whoever steps forward gets in the
parade. I will make sure to forward your comment onto the parade
committee.
The comment regarding the volume of the bands is also a common one. We
discuss this with the groups each year, but they still tend to like to
"entertain" at a certain volume. We are now offering more seating
outside of the band tent. We will also discuss this issue with the
bands again next year.
You make a good suggestion about having more access to the popular
events. We try and try to make this happen each year. The major
challenge is finding people who want to work on a national holiday.
We have not considered a new years event, but we will talk it over.
Concerning the Community Center discussion - would you be willing to
serve on a focus group that will meet two or three times over the next
three months? Please let me know.
Sincerely
Todd Hoffman
Park and Recreation Director

Hi Todd,
Was reading through the minutes from the July Park & Rec Commission
meeting and wanted to pass along a few comments about the celebration on
the 4th. I noticed you all had your own comments and thoughts, but not
sure how the public comments should best be directed, thought I'd start
with you.
First, it's a great community event! So great that we always plan to
stay here rather than go somewhere for that holiday. For me it kicks up
great childhood memories of the 4th of July in my hometown, about the
size of Chanhassen. So, I guess it's really for the kids first and
foremost. With that in mind, I have a few ideas for consideration:
have the parade earlier even 9 or 10 am. It's very hot by 2:30 pm, very
little shade on the route and it occurs right in the middle of that
nap/cranky time which makes it tough on the kids.
I agree about more music, drums, bands, majorettes, dance teams,
skateboarders, motorcycles, bikes, whatever, and less political stuff.
The bands on the 3rd were great but absolutely deafening. The kids
couldn't take the noise level and my ears were ringing too. A simple
volume adjustment. One could not have any conversation while the music
was on. Partially the acousitcs of the tent, I suppose.
Don't worry so much about having tons of activities. Do some and charge
for them if you need to make it work financially. Maybe less variety
with better access, like 2 stations of the popular ones such as Water
Wars.
Loved the idea of a booth to encourage larger participation in the
fishing contest. I didn't even know their WAS a kid fishing contest and
I've been at this thing for 4 years now. I think having so many things
going on dilutes the participation. People just enjoy hanging out with
their families and friends, socializing.
Just a few ideas from an appreciative citizen, thanks to everyone who
helps make this event a success!!!
Has Chan ever considered a family event for New Year's Eve?
~--%Lastly, where can I track more details on the community center idea?
Thanks, Cindy Skack

Dear Linda:
On behalf of Minnesota Recreation and Park Association, we say THANK YOU to the City of Chanhassen
for your assistance with our National Playground Safety Institute. The event was held September 4-6 at
the Chanhassen Recreation Center.
The Chanhassen Recreation Center staff was wonderful! They were professional and extremely helpful.
They made our group of 90 participants feel welcome, and they were always ready to help in any way
possible.
We were especially impressed with the recreation center staff on Friday, as a thunder/lightning storm
caused a power outage in the area. The staff immediately began to work on a back-up generator and
lighting for our course room. They definitely turned a challenging situation into a workable environment.
The power did resur~e shortly thereafter. However, we're grateful for the staff's action plan during the
power outage. We believe the Chanhassen Recreation Center staff was instrumental in making our event
a successful one! Again, thank you.

Dear Nathan
Thank you for your e-mail letter concerning skate parks. Iam pleased to hear that you and your
friends enjoy theChanhassen Skate Park. The park master plan for Roundhouse parks calls fora
couple of potential new attractions. A hockey rink and tennis courts are two such improvements.
Currently the Roundhouse Park plan does not call fora skate park. In fact the City currently has
no plans to construct additional skate parks anywhere in the City. You are welcome to attend a
Park and Recreation Commission meeting and present your idea for their consideration. The
Commission meets every fourth Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
Thank you again for contacting me.

Subject: new skate park
Dear Mr. Hoffman,
Hi, my name is Nathan Adams of Chanhassen and I'm 12 years old. I have a new idea for
another attraction for Chanhassen, a new skate park. I asked some of my friends what they
thought about what they thought of the Chanhassen skate park by Target, Festival Foods,
and the Library, they said they liked it a lot but it was always way too crowded. I
was thinking that we could maybe build one at roundhouse park, witch is on the other side of
Chanhassen, on Minnewashta Parkway. Minnewashta Parkway is located off of Highway 7,
and Highway 5andon Lake Minnewashta. There is plenty of space fora smalllskate park
there. It's alsoa good thing to be around there because there are tons of skateboarders
that live around there including me. AIotofkids play other sports and don't have time to
drive all the way down to the other skate park so then they can just go there for a little and
go back to their house. If it is completely unacceptable, please tell me what I could do to
maybe make this happen. Please RSVP me at sk8boarder427~msn.com.
Ispeakon behalf of the kids of roundhouse park and Chanhassen. Thank you for spending
your time to read this Mr. Hoffman.
Sincerely, Nathan Adams

issues the City fnccs. I-taring all of the candidates as knowledgeable as possible
about ibc operations of city government is highly desirable. Knowing the facts
rcgarding policies should help you develop stronger and better platforms. In
addition, a knov,'ledgeable c:mdidate is less likely to establish a platform that later

To help you understand Chanhassen's form of government and issues facing the city,
Iarn inviting you to meet with our department heads on Thursday, September 26 at
6:00 p.m. We will meet in the council chambers at city hall. Each department head
will be introduccd and give a brief desc~Sption of the programs they administer. If
you have questions, feel fl'ee to ask us at the end our presentations, or to stay after the
meeting and speak with us individually.
I anticipate that dining the course of the campaign you ma), desire more specific
information on one program or another. This meeting will help you place a name
