Funeral services are planned at St. Hubert's Church in Chanhassen at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, Aug. 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. prior to mass. At the Aug. 13 Chanhassen City Council meeting, current Mayor Tom Furlong paid tribute to Klingelhutz. "We lost a great man and a visionary leader for our own city of Chanhassen," Furlong said. "Al was a good man and we're all going to miss him." Aloysius H. Klingelhutz was born on the family farm in Chanhassen on June 9, 1921, to Dennis and Susan (Jacques) Klingelhutz. As an adult, Klingelhutz was a farmer/ mayor/ county commissioner and realtor who literally helped turn Chanhassen into a city. Klingelhutz worked with others in the early 1960s to merge Chanhassen Township with the village of Chanhassen. Klingelhutz Lived in the township, which in 1961 was the largest piece of unincorporated land in Carver County and the target of competing local governments, according to the city's centennial history book. On the west end of the township, land was being annexed to Chaska to accommodate the McKnight Development known as the "new town of Jonathan." Victoria was thinking about annexing another part of the township, and another group was promoting annexation of the township to Excelsior. The township was populated by fanners, one of whom was Klingelhutz. "The farmers were leery because they figured their taxes would go up. A lot of them were losing their farms. They couldn't make their payments the way it was," recalled Klingelhutz in a story in the Chanhassen Villager last year. A Chanhassen Township supervisor at the time, he campaigned with several other township residents for a referendum supporting an annexation to Chanhassen. On May 2, 1967, The .merger was approve by a 2 to 1 margin. : i Lager com/ news /a1- klingelhutz- mr- chanhassen- dies -at- age /article; obe0... 8 /,15/2012 Al Klingelhutz, `Mr. Chanhassen,' cues at age 91 - Chanhassen Villager: News Page 2 of 3 It was the beginning of a new Chanhassen. Following the annexation, another election was held within weeks for a new city council, and Klingelhutz was one of the new members elected. With its growth, Chanhassen had to change the way it conducted business. City leaders knew they needed a plan for orderly growth and they needed to preserve some land for parks. Klingelhutz was familiar with the Welter family that owned property on Lake Ann. "I told one of the boys if they ever wanted to sell, I wanted to talk to them," said Klingelhutz. "It wasn't too much later that they were ready, so we negotiated with them and passed a referendum in 1969 to buy the property. It was one of the best investments ever made by the city. It's a beautiful park." Klingelhutz said the city paid $300 per acre for the land and was also able to get state and federal - grants - to h 1p witirtire - purch se "It was a heck of a deal for the city. I'm proud of the way it turned out," he said. Although busy raising his family and running a farm, Klingelhutz decided to run for mayor when Gene Coulter announced his retirement from the position. After handily winning the 1971 election, he worked to continue modernizing the city operations. The centennial history book quotes a "long -time resident" as saying Klingelhutz "turned the city into professional people." As mayor, Klingelhutz also served as the city's ambassador, representing the city at various functions at home and elsewhere. It was during this time he became known as "Mr. Chanhassen," although Klingelhutz said he doesn't know the exact origin of the label. He was a farmer - mayor. There was no city manager. That responsibility fell on Klingelhutz. "Because of growth, the job required a lot of time," said Klingelhutz. "I'd have to come out of the field or barn a lot to run to city hall to take care of business, and there were a lot of meetings to attend." The job took its toll on the man who was farming the same land that his father fanned. He tells people that the reason his hands are so big is because of all the cows he milked by hand before milking machines became popular. During the city's annual Frontier Days celebration in 1972, he was asked by the Chanhassen Jaycees to sit in the dunk tank they used to raise money to sponsor the festivities. Community residents gathered around as the 6- foot -3 -inch mayor sat on the seat waiting for someone to throw a ball at the target, thereby tripping a mechanism that caused the person on the scat to drop into a tank of water. When a ball hit the target, Klingelhutz went dawn, but it soon Mme ap <i : ,.hat he couldn't get back up. Meanwhile, his family handled most of the farm chores, including picking and selling sweet corn and other vegetables. Members of the Chanhassen Fire Department and the Jaycees also offered their assistance and came to help out. After taking a few years away from public service, Klingelhutz was elected to represent the city of Chanhassen for eight years on the Carver County Board. He said he was always proud to represent Chanhassen. "It was and still is a good place to raise a family and run a business. That's why it has attracted so many people and grown so much. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else." Klingelhutz was born on June 9, 1921, in his family's farm house one mile south of downtown Chanhassen - on - Highway - 1 - 0 - 1 - was - the - sixth - of trinee chi - orn to Dennis aid - Susan (Jacques) Klingelhutz. He attended St. Hubert's Catholic Grade School when it was housed in the convent and featured only several classrooms for all the students in first through eighth grade. After grade school, he attended and graduated from Eden Prairie High School, which was the school district serving the area south of Chanhassen at that time. Eventually, Al bought the dairy operation from his parents. "We went to the attorney about the farm," he said. "I can still see him. He drew up the contract and looked at my dad kind of seriously and said, `You're being tough on the kid. He'll never make it. "' The contract required Al to repay his parents within 10 years. "God, I had it paid up in nine and -a -half years," AI smiled. "Things were kind of tough, but I had a good herd of cows. I fooled that old judge." Klingelhutz remained a bachelor until he was 33 years old, at which time he married another Iifelong Chanhassen resident, Mary Jane Roeser, on Sept. 15, 1953, at St. Hubert's Church. "I saw him in church when I was 12 and he was 22. I thought he was the most handsome guy I ever saw. I never thought of him as a boyfriend or something," Mary Jane said. That didn't come until after she had returned from three years of nursing school in St. Cloud. Together, the couple raised seven children: Brian, Claire, Michael, Neil, Joann, Al, Jr., and Kurt. ° /' €,r. r..lager.com/ news /al- kingelhutz-mr-chanhassen- dies -at- age /article_ebe0v:., 8/45/2012
