1996 February Festival Evaluation

SNOWBALL OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Chanhassen Jaycees sponsored the first annual golf tournament. A total of 70 - 80 golfers
participated. Golf America efficiently took registrations and assigned tee times. They were solely
responsible, which gave them ownership of the program. The Jaycees had a nice layout of the course,
which made it easier for City crews to plow. The Jaycees had discussed expanding the golf course to 18
holes next year. The golf tournament was a nice addition to the February Festival and they will be
included again next year.
CROSS COUNTRY FUN SKI
This was the third and final year of the Fun Ski. Low attendance over the past three years is prompting
the elimination. The Fun Ski had 20 registrants this year and with the time, effort and cost involved in
coordinating this event, it is not worth continuing. The Arboretum and Ridgeview Sports Medicine
played active roles in providing volunteers and other assistance for February Festival's Fun Ski. They
will be asked to assist with other portions of the Festival.
WINTER DIVING DEMO
The Carver County Sheriff Diving Team was scheduled to perform the demos, however, the week of the
event, Carver County changed certain policies which prompted the team to be short staffed the day of
February Festival. They needed one more safety diver to perform demonstrations in the water, but that

FOOD AND DRINK CONCESSIONS
The Chanhassen Lions, Chanhassen Centennial Committee, and the Colonial Church served and operated
the food and drink concessions.
Al1 three groups appeared to have a steady line of people.
The Lions served hot-dogs, chips, candy bars and beer. The Centennial Committee focused on chili for a
fund raiser and Colonial Church served free hot chocolate and coffee. All three groups were well-
organized and will be asked to participate next year.
BON FIRE
The bon fire never really ignited again this year. Park maintenance crews are going to gather wood
starting now for next year's bon fire. Having drier wood will certainly help. The bon fire will be down-
sized significantly in the hopes of having a heartier fire.
SKATING RINK
The skating rink will be implemented again next year. The small effort required to plow the skating rink
is well worth having another free component to the event. One suggestion was to add a warming house
sign on the trailer to signify what it is for. People seemed confused and apprehensive to enter into the
trailer to warm up.
DOG SLED DEMO AND RIDE
Excitement was in the air around the dog sled demo and rides area. Every time I looked over to the site,
they had long lines of people waiting for rides. White Wind Siberians gave approximately 230 rides. The
City retained 15% of the gross revenues, which was $90.00. Bob Johnson of White Wind Siberians
seemed extremely satisfied with the turnout and will be asked again next year.
ICE FISHING CONTEST
The attendance at the fishing contest was down this year. It was also different with no fish being caught
during the contest. All of the fish and game prizes were raffled off as door prizes at the end of the contest.
Changes for next year will include:
Changing contest time to 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
If the fishing prizes are left after the contest, names will be drawn and winners must be present to
receive the prize. If the person whose name was drawn is not present, a new name will be drawn
until someone claims the prize.
All names and ticket stubs will be put back into the drawing for the door prizes regardless of
whether they have won a board door prize.

Be sure to have sheets available to record the winners of the fish and door prizes.
S'MORES COOKOUT
Chanhassen and Bluff Creek Elementary 5th graders coordinated the s'more cookout this year. Because
the bon fire never took off, sales of the s'mores kits were down. With a smaller bon fire next year, their
sales should increase.
PARKING AND SHUTTLE SERVICE
Southwest Metro Transit and Tom Junke coordinated the shuttle service this year. A total of three shuttle
buses were used, which transported people effortlessly. Tom is very organized and again did a great job.
If Southwest Metro would like to offer their services again next year, we would love to have them.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
Look to increase donations of door and fish prizes in an effort to lower the financial output of the City.
Change fishing contest time to 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Look for ways to promote the event for free and eliminate a larger portion of the promotional budget.
Increase the fishing contest attendance through free advertising and more in-house flyers.
Revise the ice-fishing contest rules to modify and eliminate unnecessary rules.
Look for additional components to add, i.e. kite flying and/or ice surfing
