1996 Centennial and Fourth of July Celebration
Chanhassen's Centennial 4th of July Celebration will be Wednesday and Thursday, July 3rd and 4tn.
Wednesday's events will take place in a new location just north of the warming house in City Center Park.
The location change was necessary to accommodate the City Hall expansion project. Many of the events
will remain the same on Wednesday, July 3rd. New additions will include in-line skating and Tae Kwon Do
Demonstrations, The Medicine Show (a roving vaudeville show) and a Concert in the Park performed by
the Minnesota Valley Community Band.
The Chanhassen Rotary will be selling beer and softdrinks and two other vendors will be selling hot dogs,
chips, funnel cakes and popcorn.
The format for Thursday, July 4th has changed from previous years. The City will still sponsor the adult and
children's angling contest, but the afternoon beach games will be eliminated this year so that people may
participate in this year's Centennial events. Historic bus tours will be the start of the festivities on the 4th.
Tours will be given of the Henry and Martha Lyman House, the Chanhassen Pioneer Cemetery, Bluff Creek
Inn/Joseph Vogel House, St. Huberts Church and the Chanhassen Village Hall. The tour will also cover the
"old" part of town, pointing out the houses of some of Chanhassen's business founders. Tours will be given
at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The Centennial event will begin at 12:00 p.m. (noon) with the Pioneer
Centennial Village. The village will include many demonstrations and special features that were popular
100 years ago. The Centennial parade will start at 2:30 p.m. beginning at St. Huberts Church and continue
on West 78th Street to Kerber Boulevard. Many businesses, dignitaries and other groups will take part in this
fun parade. The Centennial events at City Center Park will conclude at 5:00 p.m. An ice-cream social will
begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Ann Park Pavilion. The 4th of July Celebration will conclude with the
fireworks display at 10:00 p.m.
Promo~;ions for the 4th of July has included a schedule of events insert in the Chanhassen Villager and the
Chaska Herald newspapers. Ads will appear in the Chanhassen Villager, Victoria Gazette and the Sun
Sailor newspapers. Six plywood 4th of July signs have been placed in various locations of the City, a banner
is displayed by St. Huberts, and schedules of events and posters have also been distributed around town.
I have been confirming with vendors and suppliers and taking care of the last minute details. The
celebration is #1 priority and will be receiving and my full attention the next few weeks.
