4c Summer Softball EvaluationCITY OF - MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director FROM: Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation Supervisor DATE: October 17, 1996 SUB J: Summer Softball Evaluation The Chanhassen Adult Summer Softball program had 53 teams this year. The softball league has dropped in size two years in a row; however, I am not pushing the panic button. I believe softball currently is going through a down phase. Through more effort on my part we can increase league size again. Corporate League Corporate League had 12 teams this year. With the new businesses in town, I would like to add additional teams. Teams appeared to be satisfied throughout the season. Women's League I can't figure out why this league decreases in size practically every year. We are in danger of the league folding. Many teams are discussing playing in other communities. Many teams have asked me why we can't open up the eligibility boundaries allowing outside teams to play. I have mixed emotions about his issue. One part of me says that the fields are in such high demand that we wouldn't be serving the best interest of our residents if the league allows non-residents to play. On the other hand, I don't want this league to fold. Maybe this topic needs to be scheduled at a Park and Recreation Commission meeting. The managers of the league seem equally concerned about the decreasing numbers. They would like to meet and discuss this topic before next year's season. I think that would be a good idea. Over 40 This league is now an officially sanctioned Over 40 league, which the players are happy with. The Over 40 league would like a scheduled in-house tournament. With the Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director 10/17/96 Page 2 extended season, 2 or 3 regular season games can be eliminated to incorporate the tournament. Men's Open The Men's Open league again was at its maximum number of teams with 16. I will try to balance the upper and lower teams. Currently, six teams played in Class C and ten played in Class D. My goal is to even out the leagues again to eight teams each. Co-Rec For the first time in many years, the upper and lower divisions were combined. Having only three upper division teams prompted the decision to combine. Combining the leagues worked; however, two separate leagues would be ideal. General Comments: 1. Change games from eight to seven innings. 2. Implement a no-dig rule for the batters box. 3. Schedule game times on the hour and play four games per night per field. 4. Keep umpire pay scale the same at $16.50 - $18.00 per game. 5. League and runner-up winners enjoyed t-shirts instead of plaques for their prizes. 6. Address the City of Chanhassen's rule regarding non-residents playing. 7. Look for new ways to increase the number of teams. 8. Investigate legitimacy of offering a double header league. g:\park\sb\96eval.mem QUARTERS PROGRAM IS OFFERED: Participants in each class Length of class (minute.s) Class fee/session F W SP Length of class (in weeks) Meetings/Week REVENq3-E # of participants fee/class X # of classes/yr.
