Summer 1996 Evaluation
Attached please find detailed "After Action Reports" on my summer programs. I am looking for
your input on whether the service we provided in the summer of 1996 was adequate, or if the
community is asking for additional programs.
In brief, I felt the summer programs ran very smoothly. Attendance numbers were consistent
with previous years. The tennis program was a stumbling block this season. The department has
evaluated participant comments and will incorporate appropriate changes in 1997.
For a quick reference, I have highlighted the revenues/expenses for all programs on the attached
sheet. For more detailed information, After Action Repons are attached.
Thank you.

Kelly Van Reisen - 1st year
Kids love cooking, so this class has been designed especially for them. They
prepared many fun recipes, discussed kitchen safety, and of course, sampled all
the creations!
This class was very popular. I am proposing that this class be offered this fall
at the rec. ctr. I am gearing the class for the students that attend Bluff Creek
Elementary School. Kelly will be teaching the fall class. For concurrent
classes, we may want to consider increasing the maximum number per class to
20 plus and hire an assistant.

Description:
Crafts, games, songs, snacks and more, all tailored to 3 years olds who are not quite ready for

location)
Recommendations:
Of the four classes offered (two classes per session), one class in each session was canceled. Two
classes were held with 10 and 11 children registered for those classes. Kjersten did a nice job. I
would recommend her for another season.

Summer Tennis Program - 1996
Instructor:
Heather Hercules - Head Instructor, 1st year
Ryan Wardle - Assist - 3rd year
Mark Swenson - Volunteer - 1 st year
Description: Youth Tennis Lessons Fun and skills go together in this instructional program.
Class sizes are limited for more individual attention. The fundamentals are taught through creative games, drills
and play for both new and returning tennis students.
Adult Tennis Lessons Learn the basics or enhance skills already developed in these
adults only tennis classes. Beginners: Forehand, backhand, and serve techniques will be taught to those with little
or no tennis experience. Continuing: Full serve techniques, strategy for single and double play, and further
development of skills.
Junior Tennis Team Competition, skill development, sportsmanship, etiquette, and
fun are part of this summer tennis program sponsored by Chanhassen Park and Recreation and the United States
Tennis Association (USTA). Matches are played in the metro area.
Recommendations: It is my recommendation that Heather be considered if she is interested in coming back
for another season. Due to transition in both full time and seasonal staffing this program experienced a less than
ideal season. Next year we will be better prepared.

the various animals and watch the sea lion show. Upon arrival at
the park, children enjoyed a picnic lunch (participants brought their
own lunches). School bus transportation was provided by the
Hanus Bus Company with pick up at the Chanhassen Recreation

Recommendation:
Numbers were pretty good (28 children). Participants enjoyed the
trip and their lunch in the park. The sea lion show at 2 p.m. was a
nice addition to the regular exhibits at the zoo. Would suggest
bringing water for the children and squirt bottles to "cool off" with
if it is a hot day (this was definitely welcomed by all participants).

Summer Discovery Playground
Dates of Event:
Monday, June 10, 1996 - Friday, August 2, 1996
Description:
A 2-hour, once a week program for eight weeks held at local
neighborhood parks. Approximately 450 children were supervised by
five playground leaders and one director. Activities included games,
crafts, nature projects, songs and snacks, all revolving around weekly
themes. Ages included 4 - 6 year olds (Tiny-Mites) and 7 - 11 year
olds (Dyna-Mites). Volunteers ("Leaders in Training") involved
children 12 and older who assisted leaders with the various activities
and projects.
Recommendation:
A very successful and enjoyable summer at the playgrounds. Allowing
the director to work on planning, preparation and administrative work
was definitely a positive and beneficial approach. Leaders were able to
take more responsibility at the sites and be involved with decisions and
happenings. Would suggest continuing with leader planning of
weekly activities and transporting of materials and supplies. Buy
portable cameras that staff could keep with the supplies, so photos can
be taken throughout the summer. Possible additions or revisions of
current playground sites and times will also be recommended.
1997 Summer Discovery Playground Proposals:
Two parks, Herman Field and Pheasant Hills, have had very low
participant numbers for the past two summers. Although 1995 figures
are not available, the figures for 1996 are comparable and included 11
children at Herman Field Park and 15 children at Pheasant Hills Park.
*Would it be most beneficial to continue with playground at these
sites, drop one or both locations or add a new site to the schedule in
replacement of these existing sites?
With the proposed addition of a playground leader for 1997, we would
like to add a new playground site or two to the present schedule.
*If approved, which playgrounds would be the most desired and
appropriate locations in Chanhassen?
A schedule of 1997 playground sites and times will be determined at a
later date depending on additions and/or approvals.
In order to develop more consistency in the playground program, we
would like to have all morning programs run from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30
a.m. and all afternoon programs run from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Weekly staff-meetings would be scheduled for a specific weekday
following an afternoon playground (thus replacing the previous times
during the Tuesday afternoon break). Wednesday Wing Dings (1 p.m.
at Lake Susan) would be staffed and handled by the Playground
Director.
During the week after playground and before camp, we would like to
offer a few all-day field trips for interested participants. Field trips
would be held on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the week.
Playground Leaders would chaperone the trips, allowing for planning
of Lake Ann Adventure Camp by the Playground Director. Sign-up
and procedures would follow those set for Thursday afternoon Super
Events.

Mark lacked an appropriate level of enthusiasm and did not perform effectively as a playground leader.
Do not re-hire.
Serenity is a very dependable leader who is always willing to do a little extra for the staff and children.
Invite back for another season.
Chrissy is an enthusiastic, caring and responsible playground leader who works very well with children.
Invite back for another season.
Katie is responsible, cooperative and caring in her work as an effective playground leader. Invite back for
another season.
Elizabeth did a great job this summer. She has a big heart and is very sensitive to her staff and
participants of the program. Leave the job as Playground Director open for Elizabeth in 1997 if she is
interested.

Lake Ann Adventure Camp
Dates of Event:
Description:
Recommendation:
August 12, 1996 - August 16, 1996, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
(extra hours available: 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.)
One full week of outdoor camp activities at Lake Ann Park
including daily swimming, canoe instruction, crafts, games, nature
events and snacks. Camp was led by the Summer Discovery
Playground staff with help from the lifeguards at Lake Ann Beach.
An optional camp-out on Thursday night was available to interested
participants. Camp was open to children entering grades 2-6. Cost
was $70 per child, with $65 for each additional family member.
A very successful and enjoyable week of camp for both the children
and leaders. Enrollment was at the maximum of 46, with others
being on a waiting list. Ratio of leaders to children was
approximately 1:9, which was appropriate. Suggest staying near
this ratio. Children were divided into two groups according to age
(7 - 8 year olds and 9 - 11 year olds), which allowed for two
different schedules during the day. Participants enjoyed the
scheduled activities, especially swimming, canoeing and fishing.
The Thursday night camp-out went very well. Having parents help
to set up tents is a definite must. Allowing the campers to swim
while dinner was cooked worked out well. Participants played
games, had s'mores at the campfire and had a dance party.
Morning included breakfast, cleaning up tents and playing games.
Overall, camp was very successful and allowed for a variety of
activities for all participants.

Numbers were great (approximately 200 children and adults).
Games were appropriate and able to accommodate the large
numbers. Volunteers from the City were super and very much
appreciated.
Suggestions for next year:
*Have small bags for children to put prizes and treats in.
*More than one person to do face painting.
