The month of January has seen a slight decrease in participation. Winter has set in and the extreme wind chills, sickness, and "winter relocation" have inhibited participation. Nonetheless, we have continued to receive inquiries regarding activities at the Senior Center. The Centennial Hill Apartments is now full and calls from this location continue to climb. I expect participation to bounce back with the coming of better weather. This quiet time has allowed me to organize the activities and trips for the months of April, May, and June. I have also been busy updating the 1997 activity rosters of the Men's Club, Women's Club, CHAN-o-laires, Bridge Club, etc. A new schedule for the Senior Center/Senior Linkage Line volunteer staff is also being prepared. I have also established a number of personal goals for 1997. A copy is attached. I have also included the average participation numbers we have had for our daily activities, as well as our total monthly attendance at the Senior Center. g:\park\seniorsXdecactivities.doc Trips and Special Events (December - January) Holiday Social & Entertainment Mankato Lighting Tour (Joint Trip with Travel Easy) 4 Hour Defensive Driving Course - 4 Tickets to Christmas (Chaska Community Center) Saturday Night Special "Chinese Night" Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Mystic Lake Casino Trip 103 seniors 15 seniors 30 seniors 27 seniors Canceled due to weather 20 seniors 26 seniors (As of 1/21/97) Activity Numbers Women's Club Men's Club Bridge Book Club CHAN-o-laires Woodcarving Bowling Bingo Soup Luncheon Card Club Free Movie & Popcorn Hand & Foot 14 women 10 men 16 semors 8 semors 26 semors 9 semors 7 semors 23 semors 14 semors 16 semors 8 seniors 14 seniors Monthly Attendance Numbers December January 550 seniors (Does not include the Holiday Social. Goals for the Chanhassen Senior Center 1997 1) Continue to supervise and recruit volunteers to assist with extra office tasks and special events. 2) Maintain clear communication between SLL (Senior Linkage Line) Coordinator and myself to help better the resources we have to offer to seniors in the community. Schedule bi-weekly meetings to touch base on our monthly goals. 3) Institute a written policy regarding registration payment and refund regulations. 4) Organize an overnight or extended trip during the summer months. Make contacts with local travel agencies to assist with planning details. 5) Plan a variety of events that promote intergenerational activity. Include organizations like the 4-H clubs, church youth groups, cub scouts, girl scouts, etc. 6) Create a "Health Awareness Week," sometime in June, July or August. Bring in area health professionals to share the latest information on the newest health topics. Include hearing tests, cholesterol tests, blood pressure & weight checks, podiatrist, nutrition, exercise, etc. 7) Include a mystery trip on the 1997 calendar. 8) Design a spread sheet to track and itemize expenses throughout the year. This will make budget planning for 1998 smoother. This will also help pin-point unnecessary expenses. 9) Increase interaction with other neighboring senior centers, planning joint trips and activities together. 10) Promote the Chanhassen Senior Center more effectively in the Chaska Herald and continue to submit weekly press releases in the Chanhassen Villager and the Wayzata Weekly News. 11) 12) 13) 14) 15) 16) 17) Involve City Council members, Chanhassen Mayor, and Chanhassen Villager in large senior events; Saturday Night Specials, congregate dinning, etc., to keep them informed of the growth the Senior Center is experiencing. Aim to increase the participation level in the Men's Club. Include and plan more active projects and field trips they can participate in. Attend more of the local senior service provider meetings to keep updated on the latest senior issues in Carver County. Remain on the Carver County Senior Expo committee. Revise all the activity rosters for the Men's Club, Women's Club, Woodcarving, Bowling, Card Club, Bridge Club, Bingo, Crafts, Book Club, CHAN-o-laires, etc. Coordinate a Volunteer Appreciation luncheon with the SLL Coordinator for the SLL and Senior Center volunteers, Senior Commission and SAB (Senior Advisory Board) members. This luncheon should be scheduled in the month of January. Organize a phone list that matches up with the mailing list. Continue to promote the food shelf program, and encourage people to donate food. 18) 19) 20) Acquire a pop machine for the Senior Center when City construction is completed. Establish new activities at the Senior Center. Possibly computer sessions, oil painting, etc. Continue to communicate with Planning Department, Park & Recreation Director and Senior Commission to assist with any necessary plans for the new congregate dining program. We are in the early stages of gathering information from other community centers and "fine tuning" it to meet our needs. We Corporate Wellness: We are in the initial stages of developing a corporate fitness program. We are currently working with Emerson EMC, a local corporation, on a trial basis in an attempt to create a satisfactory program that we could then market to other local companies. MISCELLANEOUS ISSUES Parking: There is an increasing parking problem for paying customers in the morning and evenings hours. We are trying to take a pro-active approach by working with both CAA and Bluff Creek Elementary to alleviate the problem. New Rental Policy: There has been a mixed customer reaction to the new rental policy. The staff feels we may be losing many local community organizations due to the new administrative charge. We are currently logging all customer comments regarding the policy in an effort to determine which groups are being affected most by the changes. Information will be gathered and findings will be presented to Todd Hoffman in mid- February. G:\park~pattySrec.ctr\DecMonthlyReport96 ~
