In reviewing this report you will see that yes, indeed, it was a busy summer for Park and

Summer Discovery Playground
Dates of Event:
Monday, June 9, 1997 - Friday, August 1, 1997
Description:
A 2-hour, once a week program for eight weeks held at local
neighborhood parks. Approximately 450 children were supervised by
seven playground leaders and one director. Activities included games,
crafts, nature projects, songs and snacks, all revolving around weekly
themes. Ages included 4 - 6 year olds (Tiny-Mites) and 7 - 11 year
olds (Dyna-Mites). Volunteers ("Leaders in Training") involved
children 12 and older who assisted leaders with the various activities
and projects.
Recommendation:
A very successful and enjoyable summer at the playgrounds. Allowing
the director to work on planning, preparation and administrative work
was definitely a positive and beneficial approach. Leaders were able to
take responsibility at the sites and be involved with decisions and
happenings. Would suggest continuing with leader planning of
weekly activities and transporting of materials and supplies. Buy
portable cameras that staff could keep with the supplies, so photos can
be taken throughout the surmner.
1998 Snmmer Discovery Playground Proposals:
If we continue to offer two sites at the same time an evaluation of
numbers should occur so that leader to children ratios are appropriate.
Schedule parks that are low in attendance at the same time.
In order to maintain consistency in the playground program, we
would like to have all morning programs continue to run from 9:30
a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and all afternoon programs run from 1:00 p.m. -
3:00 p.m. Weekly staff meetings would be scheduled for a specific
weekday following an afternoon playground (thus replacing the
previous times during the Tuesday afternoon break). Wech~esday
Wing Dings (12 Noon at Lake Susan) would be staffed and handled by
the Playground Director.

Lake Ann Adventure Camp
August 11, 1997- August 15, 1997, 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
(extra hours available: 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.)
One full week of outdoor camp activities at Lake Ann Park including
daily swimming, canoe instruction, crafts, games, nature events and
snacks. Camp was led by the Summer Discovery Playground staff
with help from the lifeguards at Lake Ann Beach. An optional camp-
out on Thursday night was available to interested participants. Camp
was open to children entering grades 2~6. Cost was $70 per child,
with $65 for each additional family member.
A very successful and enjoyable week of camp for both the children
and leaders. Enrollment was 37 (below the maximum of 45). Ratio of
leaders to children was approximately 1:7, which was very
appropriate. Suggest staying close to this ratio. Children were divided
into two groups according to age (7 - 8 year olds and 9 - 11 year olds),
which allowed for two different schedules during the day. Participants
enjoyed the scheduled activities, especially swimming, canoeing and
fishing.
The Thursday night camp-out went very well. Having parents help to
set up tents is a definite must. Allowing the campers to swim while
dinner was cooked worked out well. Participants played games,
worked on lanyards, had s'mores at the campfire and listened to
music. Morning included breakfast, cleaning up tents and playing
games.
Overall, camp was very successful and allowed for a variety of
activities for all participants.

Summer Newsletter, Press Release, Mailing to 1996 participants
NOBODY GETS BENCHED IN TENNIS. Try it...there's never a dull
moment. Fun and skills go together in these instructional programs. All
Junior programs are conducted under the auspices of the USTA "National
Junior Tennis League," and directed by United States Professional Tennis
Association teaching Pro, Jim Martin. Class sizes are limited for more
individualized attention. All Chanhassen Park and Recreation tennis programs
are conducted by teaching professionals of the ElS Tennis Academy under the
direction of the United States Tennis Association Pro Jim Martin.
Youth Tennis "Beginner" programs are for persons with very little or no
tennis instruction. "Intermediate 1" programs are for persons who have taken
beginner tennis lessons and are ready to move up to the next level.
"Intermediate 2" programs are for tennis players who have a good command of
the forehand, backhand, volley and serve strokes, and who are playing
competitively. Instructor approval is required before registering for
Intermediate 2. "Little Tennis" programs include free use of a tennis racquet
during the program if you don't have one.
Adult Tennis Lessons Learn to play tennis is just 6 sessions! It's easy and
it's fun the USTA "Play Tennis America" way. This program is a three level
program. It combines instruction and play while emphasizing the fun and
social aspects of tennis.
Beginners: Forehand, backhand, volley and serve teclmiques will be taught to
those with little or no tennis experience.
Continuing: A continuation of the beginner program with added strokes,
strategy for singles and doubles play, and further development of skills.
Adult Tennis League If you play tennis and are looking for fun and
competition, join the Western Lake Minnetonka Tennis League. Players will
be from all communities around Western Lake Hennepin. Matches will be
played each Saturday morning starting at 9:00 a.m. Leagues include men's and
women's singles and doubles. The playing site will alternate each Saturday
between the Chaska High School tennis courts and the Mound-Westonka High
School tennis courts. A teaching professional will supervise the Saturday
matches.
Recommendations:
Revenue/Expenditure:
Junior Team Tennis Competition, skill development, sportsmanship,
tennis etiquette, and loads of fun are all a part of this summer tennis program
sponsored by Chanhassen Park and Recreation and the United States Tennis
Association. Matches are played in the metro area. Practices/home matches
are played at City Center Park courts.
Although numbers were down this year, the overall opinion of the program
was very positive. I would like to offer the tennis program through EIS again
in 1998. I believe the quality of lesson received by EIS is very high and that
numbers will increase in years.

Kids love cooking, so this class has been designed especially for them. They
prepared many fun recipes, discussed kitchen safety, and of course, sampled all
the creations! Class fee is $20.00.
This class was very popular. I am proposing that this class be offered this fall
at the rec. center as a holiday cooking class. I am gearing the class for students
that attend Bluff Creek Elementary School. Kelly will be teaching the winter

Children ages 7-12 years old were taken to Lake Ann Park to learn
valuable fishing and environmental information. They also shared
fishing stories and played some casting games. They spent the last
hour fishing on the Lake Ann pier.
The program proved to be fun and successful. The June 16th class was
canceled due to low numbers. This was probably due to a lack of
advertising. The August dates, thanks in part to more advertising
(Chanhassen Villager and flyers in Bluff Creek Elementary), were
filled to capacity with 16 and 14 children. The children seemed to
have an enjoyable experience, and the fishing was excellent.
Recommendation:
The program was a success both in enrollment and financially. If staff

Each Wednesday fun trips are offered to popular locations. Trips are chaperoned by
playground staff and designated check-in times and locations are established at least twice
each trip. Parents may specify that a child is to remain with a chaperon at all times. Bus
transportation is provided from the Chanhassen Recreation Center (CRC), 2310 Coulter
Blvd. and City Center Park (CCP), 690 Coulter Drive. Pre-registration is required by
noon on the Monday before the Super Event and is on a first come/first served basis until
the maximum is reached. Parents are welcome to attend at a reduced fee. Open to ages
7-11.
Trips are selected based on type/style of trip and the cost of the trip. While we like to
offer a majority of trips at a nominal fee, the grand finale trip is generally a higher priced
trip.
This year, all trips were canceled. Registrations for all Super Events were extremely low.
Trips will be offered again next year. We will look for some different outing destinations
and pump up the publicity.
