5d 4th of July Street DanceCITYOF CHANHASSEN MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Hoffman, Park & Recreation Director FROM: Jerry Ruegelner, Recreation Supervisor DATE: January 21, 1998 SUB J: Selection of Entertainment, Fourth of July Street Dance After last year's perfbrmance by the Hi-Tops, the Park & Recreation Commission directed staff to look at alternative bands to perform at the July 3rd street dance. I have been working through Iqoffman Talent Agency and have received information and demo tapes from the Casablanca Orchestra and Hot Rod Chevy. As the commission may recall, Casablanca Orchestra was recommended by fenner Commissioner Jane Meger. Casablanca Orchestra is a lively ten person band who play music from the 1950's to the current top hits. Their performance rate is $2,500. Hot Rod Chevy is a band similar to the Hi-Tops that play music from the 1950's to the most current hits. They are a five piece band that has been playing together since 1981 and their performance rate is $1,750. The Park & Recreation Commission can review the promotional material and listen to the two demo tapes at the meeting. RECOMMENDATION It is staff's recommendation that the Park & Recreation Commission select the Casablanca Orchestra for the July 3,'d street dance. In staff's opinion, even though they carry a higher price tag, they would be a bigger draw and boost the energy of our street dance. Once the commission selects a band, l will have a contract prepared for your final approval at the February meeting. g:' park",4th',98band.doc CBO "...TI4E MOST OUTRAC~EOUS PARTY BAND!" WEREWOLVES OF LONDON Hot Rod Chevy is a five piece Rock 'n' Roll band with an eleven year history of appearances in the United States and Canada. As one of the most popular bands in the upper Midwest, Hot Rod Chevy has established themselves on the festival and fair circuit, as well as street dances, car shows, police and fireman association tours. The band is one of the top attractions for clubs, casinos, showrooms and corporate events around the country. As a backup group and opening act, Hot Rod Chevy has become the fa:st choice for name acts from the 50's through the 80's. Hot Rod Chevy is going into it's second decade with a new and improved presentation. Because of the musical capabilities and the variety of styles the individual players bring to the mix, the band is constantly expanding it's musical horizons. Besides playing all of the great 50's and 60's music that you've become accustomed to, they have expanded their repertoire to include songs from the seventies right up to the latest rock favorites. While the band continues to tour the United States and Canada (in their private 40-foot coach), they are also busy preparing for their upcoming tours with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Fabian, Sam Moore (Sam and Dave) and Tommy Roe. They have also just released their newest cassette/CD. It's a collection of classics recorded live outdoors at the Sioux Falls Arena this past summer. Hot Rod Chevy consists of three horn players, five vocalists, two drummers, three keyboard players, two guitarists, and two bass players. How is all this possible from a five piece band? Look at the impressive list of instruments this band uses during a performance: · Tenor Sax · Alto Sax · Baritone Sax · Trombones · Acoustic Drums · Trumpet · Bass Guitar · Electric Guitar · Acoustic Guitar · Electronic Drums · Piano · Flugelhorn · Synthesizers · Harmonica Rod Jerke and Kevin King teamed up in 1981 to form Hot Rod Chevy Kevy. For several years the band toured the night club and showroom circuit as a variety act, until Bobby Vee's personal manager caught up to them in Minneapolis. He convinced them to return to their musical roots (predominantly the 60's vocal and horn sound). Since then, they have backed up major artists from the 50's and 60's including Chuck Berry, the 5th Dimension, Gene Pitney, Tommy Roe, Peter Noone, Bo Diddley and many more stars of rock 'n' roll! They have also appeared with 70/80's groups like The Guess Who and Loverboy. They have performed for some of America's top corporations including American Express in Hawaii, Buick in Minneapolis, and the Gallup Organization in Lincoln, Nebraska. They have also played major venues and events like the Worlds Largest Beach Party, the Colorado and Iowa State Fairs, the Metrodome in Minneapolis and Disney World in Orlando, Florida. With a shortened name, Hot Rod Chevy is taking the timeless classics and adding material from a multitude of styles into the 90's. This flexibility is made possible by a combination of players from the old as well as the "The heart and soul of the music transcends the particular era it Richardson. The audience deserves the kind of performance one only gets from an experienced, full time, professional band. It's the best of both worlds; the big, showy, horn band style of the 60's complemented by the new, exciting, vibrant sounds of today's music. Hot Rod Chevy's business philosophy is simple: Expand the identity of the group while continuing to build upon it's already established fan base. In other words, make the event happen. The late Del Shannon always said it best before our shows with him: "Play it like you mean it... JUST ROCK ON AND ON AND ON!" "Anytime you play the variety of venues we do, you have to be able to get to your audience, no matter who they are or where they're coming from. That's our forte." --"Hot" Rod Jerke HHH Metrodome Chicago Theatre Tulsa State Fair Iowa State Fair Disney Village Mauna Kea Resort Colorado State Fair World's Biggest Beach Party Mackinac Island Chuck Berry Tommy Roe Lou Christie The Coasters Bobby Vee The Chiffons Little Anthony Bo Diddley The Fifth Dimension Little Eva Dickie Lee Del Shannon Brian Hyland Frankie Ford The Dixie Cups Johnny Tillotson The Drifters Gary US Bonds Freddy Cannon Martha Reeves ShangrMas Wolfman Jack Peter Noone Gene Pitney Danny & The Juniors Leslie Gore The Crystals Gary Lewis The Shirelles The Diamonds Bowser Fabian Bobby Rydell 3M American Republic Insurance Cenex/Land O' Lakes CitiBank Des Moines Iowa Police Gallup Organization Garst Seed Company General Mills Honeywell IBM Mindscape Norwest Banks
