1998 February Festival Evaluation
Food and Drink Concessions
For the third straight year, the Chanhassen Lions served and operated the food and
drink. The Lions had a super day selling out on many items. They were very
pleased. They are definitely interested in doing concessions again. I will work to
better the visibility for the Lions in an effort to increase revenues for their food
sales.
Bonfire
In my opinion, downsizing both bonfires this year worked out great. The wood
seemed dryer this year which produced heartier fires. The February Festival
participants seemed to enjoy the smaller but heartier bonfires.
S'more Cookout
The Chanhassen Boy Scouts sold s'more kits at the bonfire. They did okay and
would be interested in selling again next year. The main focus of the Boy Scouts
was to sell bait. They had a variety of bait available and were located outside of
the tent along the main entrance. Participants seemed a bit confused as to where
the locations of the bait sale was. This can easily be solved by additional signage.
Skating Rink
This year the skating rink was canceled due to the warm weather.
Sliding Hill
The participation levels for the sliding hill were higher than expected. The sliding
hill is relatively easy to prepare and should be continued.

Ice Skating Races
This year the ice skating races were canceled due to the warm weather.
Dog Sled Rides
The dog sled rides were extremely popular again this year. Bob Johnson from
Cologne operated the rides again this year and the track was on shore in the beach
area. The area was a little small, but worked well for an alternative. Weather
permitting, the track will be on the lake again next year. The city retained 15% of
gross revenues which equaled $96. I was happy with Bob and would ask him
back.
Ice Fishing Contest
The fishing contest was up from last year's totals: 632 adult tickets and 249 youth
tickets were sold for a total of 881. Advance ticket sales numbered 361, with 520
tickets sold at the event. I can't tell you how excited I was this year that
participants caught so many fish! That reinforces the decision to change the
location of the contest from Lake Susan to Lake Ann. Lake Ann proved to be a
wonderful spot to hold the contest/festival and we should continue to use this
location.
General Comments
· Explore possibility of service organizations taking over and running the ice
fishing contest. The Chanhassen Lion's organization appears interested.
· Continue to use the location at Lake Ann.
· Keep contest time the same- 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
· Move the contest up by one week.
· Increase donations of door prizes to lower city expenditures.
· Look for additional ways to lower promotional budget.
· Publicize fishing contest on City of Chanhassen utility bills.
· Add a smallest fish category.
Angle fishing ticket tables to better serve and expedite purchasing tickets.
· Look to eliminate tent and other expenditures.
· Publicly announce door prizes. Announce name of winner and prize won.
· Change design of fishing tickets to a perforated, tear-out booklet.
· Look to eliminate event brochures and replace with cheaper promotional
items.
