We will carpool in a City van. First Stop CURRY FARMS PARK "BILLY GOAT HILL" This trail, which was originally installed by the project developer, is on a very steep hill. The trail is now in need of repair. Prior to making plans to do so, I want to ensure that the Commission is comfortable with the City maintaining this trail connection. Second Stop LAKE SUSAN PARK "POTENTIAL" DOG PARK LOCATION The installation of a "dog park" in our park system would be as well received as the skate park. A big part of the success of the skate park is its great location. Unfortunately, identifying a good location for a dog park has been difficult. I dismiss Herman Field Neighborhood Park or any other neighborhood park as a potential location. Attempting to locate a fenced dog park with associated vehicle parking in a neighborhood setting would prove to be a very unpopular decision. One potential location is west of the ball field at Lake Susan Park. This has access to water and parking is available. The big drawback is its small size at only 1/3 of an acre. The minimum size for a successful dog park is 1 acre. Third Stop BANDIMERE PARK Inspect the newly installed play area and future park shelter site. Fourth Stop FOX PROPERTY ACQUISITION The City and the owner of this property have reached a settlement on the purchase of this property. I would like the Park and Recreation Commission to visit the City's newest park. G:\park\th\PRCSiteVisit9-25-01 The Gt~, oflChanhassen. What could be more fun than exercising with your dog in a safe environment.> Those of us lucky enough to live in an area where dog parks exist know that they arc a wonderful way to exercise and socialize our dogs and ourselves. The City of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Department of Parks and Recreation recently opened Beach Garden Park as an off leash dog park recreational area. The project is a partnership between thc Department of Parks and Recreation and VB-DOG (Virginia Beach Dog Owners Group). VB-DOG is responsible for self-monitoring clean up, dog licenses and dog park rules. Parks and Recreation staff monitor usage and compliance with dog park rules, and Animal Control will enforce non-compliance. At the end of a six- month trial period, Parks and Recreation, VB-DOG, and the Department of General Services will meet to discuss the usage, challenges, cost and feasibility of continuing the project. According to Parks & Recreation Department Director Sara Hensley, "Dogs contribute immensely to their family's quality of life, thus helping to cultivate a sense of commu- nity for everyone!" At a time when people are apprehen- sive to talk to strangers, Bark Parks bring people together. They break down social and economic barriers while creating a common ground. Thc parks cream an area for dogs to legally run off-leash and promotes responsible dog ownership. There are many factors that must be faced when an agency con- sider developing and operating a dog park. The successful Bark Park-pro- vides a multitude of benefits that out- ~vcigh thc risks! Are You Ready For Some Quidditch? by Amy Cart,er, CPRP Las Vegas, NV Mention "quidditch" to a group of boys and girls and you are guaranteed to see their faces light up. Quidditch holds out the promise of this exciting mix of team sports - rugby, basketball, baseball, soccer and nonstop fun. Planning this activity will allow your participants to experience the same sort of goofy games kids make up - and you don't have to necessarily pro- vide the flying broom sticks or the winged balls to do it. Quidditch combines thc flavor of thc game with lots of inventiveness fr you. If you're a fan of the HatO ~ Potter books, you arc already familiar with thc game. Pick up one of thc J.K. Rowling books to find out hmv the game is played and then use your imagination to create your mvn game of Quidditch. What's most appealing about this fictional, bewitching game is that it's experienced through thc eyes of Harry Potter, an orphaned boy wizard. Harry's moment of triumphs and defeats arc like those in all great sports; metaphors for life. A Call to all APRS Branch Members, Your Families, Friends and Acquaintances...
