Submission of Alternatives for Future Park Shelter Building;
Bandimere Park
To assist the Commission in planning for a future park shelter at Bandimere
Park, I contacted two suppliers of "pre-fabricated" park shelters. Both of these
individuals recommended that the city pursue constructing a "stick-built"
structure versus a pre-fab shelter. With the need for a concession area and
mechanical room to house imgation equipment, a standard open-air shelter
would not work. Examples of contractor built park shelters are found at Lions
Park in Victoria and Community Park in Chaska. Costs for this type of shelter
can range from $75,000 to $250,000, depending on amenities.
BACKGROUND
The master plan calls for a park shelter centrally located between the soccer
fields and baseball/softball fields. The site is just south of the newly installed
playground.
The expense and associated mess of running sewer and water services to the site
was included in the original construction of the park. A sanitary sewer line and
watermain are capped and buried below the proposed building location.
The various athletic associations would like to have the capability of hosting
games and tournaments at Bandimere Park. A shelter to act as a headquarters
with a concession stand is desirable. Some of the associations have voiced a
willingness to contribute to such a project.
The site is also home to the park's irrigation controls, which are currently
protected by an extremely heavy steel box. This enclosure required three people
and a bobcat to lift the access door for servicing. The hope is that when a shelter
is constructed, the box would disappear and the controls would be housed in an
interior utility room.
The Commission can take a look at these things first hand on our tour next
Tuesday evening.
