SUM 2004 03 04CHANHASSEN PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING SUMMARY MINUTES MARCH 23, 2004 Chairman Stolar called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Glenn Stolar, Susan Robinson, Amy O'Shea, and Tom Kelly MEMBERS ABSENT: Jack Spizale and Paula Atkins STAFF PRESENT: Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director; Corey Hoen, Recreation Supervisor; Susan Marek, Recreation Center Manager; and Dale Gregory, Park Superintendent APPROVAL OF AGENDA: O'Shea moved, Robinson seconded to approve the agenda as presented. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 4 to 0. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS: Todd Hoffman announced that the Easter Egg Candy Hunt would be held Saturday, April l 0th at the Chanhassen Recreation Center beginning at 9:00 a.m. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS: Tony Schiller, 6580 Trundle Circle provided some of his background information and then addressed the commission regarding the Miracles for Mitch Foundation sponsoring a triathlon event for children at Lake Ann Park. Commissioner Robinson asked for specifics regarding the number of kids expected and if it was going to be an annual or one time event, and what city resources would be needed. Commissioner Kelly asked about the routes anticipated for the biking and running portion of the triathlon. Commissioner O'Shea asked for clarification on the number of volunteers needed, the costs involved and how much will actually go to the Miracles for Mitch Foundation, and if there were any parking concerns. Todd Hoffman outlined the logistical items the commission and city needed to be concerned with and asked for a recommendation. Kelly moved, O'Shea seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission amend their motion to include discussion of Miracles for Mitch Kids Triathlon Race under new business. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 4to0. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Robinson moved, Kelly seconded to approve the verbatim and summary Minutes of the Park and Recreation Commission meeting dated February 24, 2004 as presented. Park and Rec Commission Summary - March 23, 2004 APPROVAL OF CITY CENTER PARK SIGNAGE. Todd Hoffman presented the staff report on this item and asked for commission feedback on the wording of the signage. Kelly moved, O'Shea seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission recommend that the wording on the City Center Park sign read, City Center Park, this area designated a pedestrian mall. Walking traffic and special need vehicles only. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 4 to 0. INITIATE DISCUSSION; 2005 PARK AND TRAIL ACOUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (CIP). Todd Hoffman presented the staff report on this item, outlining what the projects are for 2004 and what's proposed in the future and asked for commission feedback. MIRACLES FOR MITCH FOUNDATION KIDS TRIATHLON. The commission added this item to their agenda for discussion and direction. Robinson moved, O'Shea seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission recommends that the City Council approves a special events permit for the Miracles for Mitch Kids Triathlon event. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 4 to 0. REPORTS: SELF SUPPORTING PROGRAMS. 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL. Corey Hoen provided the update on the 3 on 3 basketball spring league. RECREATION CENTER. Susan Marek provided the update on the Chanhassen Recreation Center. PARK AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE. Dale Gregory provided the update on the park and trail maintenance program. ADMINISTRATIVE: ESTABLISH DISCUSSION POINTS FOR APRIL 26T}I JOINT MEETING WITH CITY COUNCIL. Todd Hoffman asked for commissioner input on the following items of discussion for the joint meeting with City Council: 1. What are the good things that happened last year? 2 Park and Rec Commission Summary - March 23, 2004 3. 4. 5. What projects are you looking forward to? What seems to be working? What is not working? Here are some suggestions/recommendations for the future. Overall the commission felt the lines of communications with the City Council were working well and they are looking forward to the playground replacement and farmers market. COMMISSION MEMBER COMMITTEE REPORTS. There were no committee reports. Todd Hoffman updated the commission on the new appointments to the Park and Recreation Commission. COMMISSION MEMBER PRESENTATIONS. Chairman Stolar thanked Amy O'Shea and Susan Robinson for their work in serving on the Park and Recreation Commission. ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET. Chairman Stolar asked Todd Hoffman to comment on the letter from the CAA. O'Shea moved, Robinson seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
