MEMORANDUM
TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director
DATE: June 15, 2004
SUB J: Administrative Items
Proposed Water Treatment Plant~ Site Design
The City of Chanhassen is currently facilitating a process to construct a municipal
water treatment plant. Two potential locations were initially investigated. These
sites were selected due to the relatively unencumbered space they offer and their
proximity to the Lotus Lake well field. The "Old Ready Mix" site located at the
northern access to the Highway 5 pedestrian bridge and the most westerly portion
of the existing South Lotus Lake Park are the two sites.
The ready mix site would require considerable grading, roadway construction, and
meeting MN Dept. of Health's setbacks from Highway 5 and the railroad tracks.
The "buildability" of this site has also been called into question due to the
property's configuration. The site is long and narrow, sandwiched between State
Highway 5 and the railroad tracks.
The Lotus Lake well field site has a greater impact on adjoining neighborhoods
and would require the removal of an existing double tennis/basketball court. The
courts are proposed to be rebuilt on the same property if the plant is constructed at
this location.
Staff would like the Park and Recreation Commission to be aware of this issue to
allow opportunity to comment.
New Highway 212 Trail Plan
The imminent construction of new Highway 212 through the heart of southern
Chanhassen has opened many opportunities for new trail construction within this
corridor. The State of Minnesota has recently provided the City of Chanhassen a
high quality aerial photograph depicting the road plan including trails. I would
like to review this document with Commissioners on Tuesday afternoon.
