MEMORANDUM
TO:
Park and Recreation Commission
FROM:
Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director
DATE:
December 3,2004
SUBJ:
Chanhassen Dog Park Discussion
Anne Murphy and Jack Spizale, members of the Dog Park Committee, met with
staff on Monday evening, November 29. A member from the Carver County
Parks staff was invited to attend the meeting, but declined to attend because they
had nothing new to report.
Commissioner Murphy has visited a number of the off-leash dog areas in the
metropolitan area and can share her findings with the Commission at the
December 14th meeting. Commissioner Murphy has also completed a variety of
search inquiries concerning dog parks and has been in contact with an
organization called ROMP. The acronym stands for "responsible owners of
mannerly pets". You can find them on the web at dogromp.org. Commissioner
Spizale discussed the merits of having a dog park centrally located within the
City, allowing for convenient pedestrian access from a variety of neighborhoods.
During our meeting we discussed the merit of a double track approach. The first
track would be to allow the discussion at Carver County to play out to some sort
of resolution. The second track centered on creating a dog park of our own within
one of the City's park properties. A thorough search of a City park map left us
with limited options. However, the one option that stood out was the possibility
of creating an off-leash dog area in the wooded area on the western side of Lake
Ann Park. The first public parking lot on your left-hand side as you enter the park
would serve as the parking area for the dog park.
Both Commissioner Spizale and Murphy agreed to visit the proposed location
over the next week and report back to the Commission on the 14th.
