Kallio 2 STORMWATER CALCULATIONS Introduction This Stormwater Report provides a comparison of pre-development and post-development runoff for an expansion project at Next Steps Learning Center located at 1430 Park Ct. in Chanhassen, MN. Requirements As per an email from the City of Chanhassen Water Resource Coordinator dated February 27, 2014, runoff rates must not increase at any point on the subject property. The existing spillway down the slope to Riley Creek must also be stabilized. Existing Site The 2.2 acre site currently consists of a 7081 square feet building, 30,130 square feet of impervious surface, 27,560 square feet of wooded area, and 31,410 square feet of lawn and open space. The majority of this site drains directly to Riley Creek. Concentrated flows from the existing parking lot drain to an existing spillway to Riley Creek. From City Water Resource Coordinator correspondence, there are issues with the slopes downstream of the parking lot spillway. The majority of the soils on the site are Kilkenny-Lester loams. These soils are formed from glacial till on moraines. A hydrologic soil group C was used in the calculations. Proposed Improvements Proposed improvements to this site include a 3159 square feet addition and modifications to the existing parking lot. The net increase in impervious surface is 2841 square feet. MODELING RESULTS Peak Discharge Rates The pre-development and post-development runoff calculations and were performed using HydroCAD software which utilizes SCS TR-20 methodologies. All runoff calculations were performed using a Type II 24-hour rainfall distribution with a 2-year rainfall of 2.8 inches, a 10-year rainfall of 4.2 inches, and a 100-year rainfall of 6.0 inches. Curve numbers were taken from the table using their respective soil group. Discharge D1 has a slight increase for the 2-year storm event because of the difficulty of using a more restrictive pond outlet. The proposed 4” PVC outlet will already be prone to clogging and using a smaller outlet to meet the 2-year existing storm criteria will be a maintenance issue. Discharge D1 meets city criteria for the 10-year and 100-year storm events. Discharge D1.2 to the existing spillway is less than existing for all storm events, meeting city criteria. Discharge D2 has a slight increase for all storm events. This is because of the difficulty of getting more runoff into the proposed dry pond due to the existing and proposed grades. The overall Discharge D is slightly increased for the 2-year storm, but less than existing for the 10- year and 100-year storm events. Downstream Assessment/Impacts Because the post development runoff is nearly equal to pre-develoment runoff, no adverse downstream impacts are anticipated. In addition, the post-development runoff to the spillway is significantly reduced for each storm event. The slopes downstream of the spillway will also be stabilized as discussed below. Spillway Slope Stabilization The slopes downstream of the existing spillway will be armored with Class II Hand Placed Riprap. The riprap section will be as shown in the attached detail. Emergency Overflow The dry pond emergency overflow is the low point in the drainage break in the parking lot.
