Deliveringindependence
Friday is a special day of the week to many of us as it marks
the end of the work week and the beginning of a few days of
freedom. But more notably, Friday is a special day for Reach
client, Daniel Sadoff, as that's his day to deliver the mail at the
Eisenhower Community Center in Hopkins. Come to
Eisenhower any Friday and you will find Dan, with a big
beaming smile, pushing the mail cart down the hallways. Dan
has been delivering the mail at Eisenhower since the
beginning of 2014 and has already made friends with some of
the many office staff in the building. "I really enjoy working here
and meeting new people," states Dan.
Dan's mail delivery job is part of Reach for Resources
Supported Employment Services which provides a 1:1 service
to individuals with cognitive disabilities to help them learn job
skills, get hired and keep their jobs. While Dan delivers mail, he
is partnered with his community living specialist, Don Horsman,
who helps Dan sort the mail and stay on task. "Dan does best if he has structured
activities and delivering mail has helped give him a place to work in a safe and friendly
Dan has come a long way since he arrived at
Reach for Resources in 2001. Dan came to Reach
wanting to learn how to become independent in
his parent's home and to meet new people. With
these goals in mind Dan was enrolled in the
in -home program that provides families with a
Reach staff who can help their child or adult at
home. Dan began learning independent living skills
such as cooking and cleaning. He also began
attending Reach recreation programs such as the
Friday Night Dances. Since coming to Reach Dan has learned how to better handle his
emotions and integrate into the community.
"Since I began working with Dan I have watched him become more confident in
himself. He is a fun guy who likes to please people. I enjoy seeing his skills improve," says
Don. All of us here at Reach for Resources look forward to seeing Dan deliver the mail
each Friday and we celebrate with him as he becomes an independent, working adult
in the community.
