REGULAR MEETING
SUMMARY MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 23, 2014
Acting Chair Carron called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Steve Scharfenberg, Elise Ryan, Brent Carron, Jim Boettcher, Rick
Echternacht, Luke Thunberg, and Jacob Stolar
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Cole Kelly and Tyler Kobilarcsik
STAFF PRESENT:
Todd Hoffman, Park and Rec Director; Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation Superintendent;
Meghan Gess, Recreation Supervisor; Jodi Sarles, Rec Center Manager; Adam Beers, Park
Superintendent; and Susan Bill, Senior Center Coordinator
APPROVAL OF AGENDA:Boettcher moved, Thunberg seconded to approve the agenda as
published. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Jerry Ruegemer announced that the Chanhassen High School
homecoming parade will be on Friday at 4:00 in downtown Chanhassen and that there will be state
softball tournaments being played at Lake Ann Park over the weekend.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS:
None.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Scharfenberg moved, Thunberg seconded to approve the Minutes of the
Park and Recreation Commission meeting dated August 26, 2014 as presented.
ESTABLISH 2014/15 ICE SKATING AND HOCKEY RINK LOCATIONS.
Meghan Gess
presented the staff report on this item. Commissioner Scharfenberg asked if there had been any requests
for additional ice rinks. Chair Carron asked about the rental prices on warming houses. Commissioner
Scharfenberg asked if the City has ever considered purchasing warming houses versus rentals.
Scharfenberg moved, Boettcher seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission approves that
the ice skating rink locations and hours for 2014-2015 be maintained the same as 2013-2014. All
voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
RECREATION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2014 HALLOWEEN PARTY PREVIEW.
Meghan Gess reviewed highlights from the upcoming

schedule of events for the 30 Annual Halloween Party scheduled for Saturday, October 25.
EVALUATION – 2014 LAKE ANN PARK CONCESSION/BOAT RENTALS.
Jerry Ruegemer
reviewed evaluations of the 2014 Lake Ann Park concession and boat rentals. Commissioner Echternacht
asked for clarification on rental prices. Commissioner Scharfenberg asked about possible programming
associated with the paddleboard rentals. Chair Carron asked about the possibility of purchasing
paddleboards versus the partnership with Twin Cities Paddleboards.
EVALUATION – 2014 SUMMER DISCOVERY PLAYGROUND/LAKE ANN ADVENTURE
CAMP.
Park and Recreation Commission Summary – September 23, 2014
Meghan Gess reviewed highlights from the 2014 Summer Discovery Playground and Lake Ann
Adventure Camp along with recommended changes for 2015. Commissioner Ryan suggested offering a
flexible schedule for days with the Summer Discovery Playground. Commissioner Ryan asked for
clarification on the feedback from parents regarding communication.
RECREATION CENTER REPORT.
Jodi Sarles provided facility updates, and program information
related to Dance for Fun, Rec Center Sports, Zumba, and the Chanhassen Photo Contest. She also

discussed upcoming events related to the Barnyard Boogie on September 12 and 2014 Artisan Fair on

November 1. Commissioner Scharfenberg asked about the cancellation of the lacrosse after school
program, and trends in room rentals. Chair Carron asked if the concrete entry had been fixed. Staff stated
it had been.
PARK AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE REPORT.
Adam Beers provided updates on work completed
over the summer in the City’s parks and trails. Regarding the shelter initiative, Commissioner
Scharfenberg asked about the status of the proposed shelter at Bandimere Park. Commissioner Ryan
asked about the concrete removal associated with the Wynsong development. Chair Carron asked about
the status of the concrete wall associated with the trail on Highway 41 north of Lake Lucy Road.
SENIOR CENTER REPORT.
Sue Bill provided highlights from the senior center activities and
programs.
COMMISSION MEMBER COMMITTEE REPORTS.
None.
COMMISSION MEMBER PRESENTATIONS.
None.
ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET.
Todd Hoffman pointed out that park dedication fees are being

collected with the development in Villages on the Ponds 4 Addition.
Boettcher moved, Thunberg seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion
carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0. The Park and Recreation Commission meeting was
adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
