BACKGROUND The sport of Pickleball is very popular in the South West Metro area and in the City of Chanhassen. That popularity has led to the necessity of addressing the addition of pickleball courts. Recently, the city received requests to place pickleball lines on a basketball court at Bandimere Heights Park and the North Lotus Lake Park tennis courts. Similar to other cities and organizations, Chanhassen has created pickleball courts in community or larger neighborhood parks where it fits the needs of that geographical area with ample parking and proximity to neighboring residents. These courts have been single -use and dedicated to pickleball participants. If pickleball lines were added, there would be the potential for conflicts with both activities at the same time. It is not recommended to add pickleball lines on existing outdoor basketball courts for the following reasons: • The 50' x 50' basketball pad isn't long enough and the uneven transition from asphalt to grass may pose a threat for injuries. • Lack of a fence hampers participants experience. • Locked box with equipment could pose a challenge to who receives access. • Unlocked equipment box has the potential for stolen equipment. Many cities do line pickleball courts on tennis courts due to the lack of dedicated pickleball facilities. However, the City of Chanhassen has responded to pickleball's popularity by building six lighted courts at the Chanhassen Recreation Center in 2015. Pickleball enthusiasts have responded positively to the new facility and the courts are being well used. In the spring of 2017, four more Chanhassen is a Community for Life - Providing for Today and Planning for Tomorrow courts will be available for play at Roundhouse Park. Having ten dedicated pickleball courts puts Chanhassen ahead of the curve over most cities in our surrounding area. In addition, the current five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) proposes a sport court that identifies tennis and pickleball courts in the 2020 calendar year that would satisfy the pickleball needs of the Bandimere residents. Staff recommends to not line pickleball courts in neighborhood tennis courts due to the number of dedicated pickleball courts we currently have and will have in the near future. The sport of pickleball continues to be popular in Chanhassen and the city has done a great job of addressing the needs of our residents. Staff will continue to monitor our pickleball numbers and make recommendations to the Park and Recreation Commission for future improvements. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the Park and Recreation Commission take no action concerning the request to paint pickleball lines on outdoor basketball and neighborhood tennis courts.
