Chanhassen Environmental Commission (EC)
Regular Meeting
November 9, 2016
Members Present: Matthew Myers, Don Vasatka, Balakrishna Chintaginjala, Bill Chappell, Wayne Benbow
Members Absent: David Hess, Charlotte Chappell
Staff Present: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resource Specialist
Minutes: October minutes were approved.
Marla Spivak TED talk: The commission watched the video explaining the importance of bees to our world, the
threat to their existence and ways to improve bee habitat. The commission then talked about the pollinator
resolution that will be presented to the Council.
Spring Forestry workshop planning: Each spring the city hosts an evening workshop focusing on trees. The
last two years have been presentations on EAB. This year the presentation is shaping up to be about trees and
shrubs to plant for pollinators and birds. This will tie into the ongoing public education for EAB by promoting
species diversity in home landscapes. Residents will learn about new and different trees and shrubs to plant to
replace ash trees or add to their existing landscape. The workshop will probably be in April.
General Discussion:
Comprehensive Plan review: the commission will be reviewing the Natural Resources section of the
Comp Plan next year. The commission will add that into the 2017 work plan.
Chinook book: the commission was asked if there were any events or programs where the Chinook book
could be used as a giveaway to residents. The commission couldn’t think of any.
