EC 2017 07 12Chanhassen Environmental Commission (EC)
Regular Meeting
July 12, 2017
Members Present: Charlotte Chappell, Bill Chappell, Don Vasatka, Wayne Benbow, David Hess
Members Absent: Keith Butcher, Rachel Popken
Staff Present: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resource Specialist
Minutes: June minutes were approved with clarifications.
July 3rd Trade Fair summary: The expo went well and visitors responded well to the pollinator display. The large poster was eye-catching and commissioners said it drew people over
to the table. Handouts of the ‘plants for pollinators’ went quick and could’ve used more. The honey sticks were very popular and ran out in the first 1.5 hrs. The seed packs were
also popular, but there were plenty of them. The commissioners agreed that there was more interest in the bees/pollinators than in water conservation. Lots of visitors weren’t aware
of the neonicotinoid issue with insecticides. And the sun was too hot to stand in.
Community Service project planning: Ideas for a community service project:
Fall pumpkin collection
Fall planting for pollinators
Build bee boxes
Build bird houses
Adopt-a-hwy clean up
Milkweed seeding
Scarecrow making craft
Fox Woods woodchip path
Jill will also check with Keith and Rachel to see if they have any ideas.
General Discussion:
GreenStep Cities: The commission reviewed the worksheet draft put together by Don and Wayne. Charlotte will check with Rachel on the survey she’s putting together for city staff.
Jill will send it out to staff and compile the returned surveys. The compiled worksheet will be send to Don and the commission before being put on an EC agenda.
RPBCWD Summer Tour is July 31, 4-6:30pm. Bill, Charlotte and Don are planning on attending. Jill will try. Wayne and David can’t make it.
Chanhassen Day at the Arboretum is this Friday, July 14.
Meeting adjourned at 7 pm
