CHANHASSEN SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES
REGULAR MEETING
April 18, 2014
Chairwoman Nevin called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Nevin, Camille Swanson, David Wisniewski, Jackie Engel, Carol
Buesgens, Dorina A. Tipton, Jean Mancini.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Thomas Wilson,
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen Al-Jaff
VISITORS: Lenny Schmitz
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Swanson moved to approve the agenda. Commissioner Engel
seconded the motion to approve the agenda. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Engel moved to approve the minutes of the February 28,
2014 meeting. Commissioner Swanson seconded the motion to approve the minutes. All voted in favor and
the motion carried.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS:
Commissioner Tipton nominated Barbara Nevin for the position of Chair, Commissioner Buesgens
seconded the nomination. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Chairwoman Nevin nominated Dorina A. Tipton for the position of Vice Chair. Commissioner Buesgens
seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
APPOINTMENT OF ADVISORY BOARD REPRESENTATIVE: Chairwoman Nevin appointed
commissioner Tipton to the Senior Advisory Board.
APPROVAL OF BY-LAWS: Commissioner Tipton moved to approve the By-Laws, Commissioner
Engel seconded the motion to approve the By-Laws. All voted in favor and motion carried.
UPDATE FROM LENNY SCHMIDT:
1. On April 26, there will be a Medicine take back at Mayor and Waconia. To date, Carver County
has collected 2,500 pounds.

2. Triad meetings are held every other month on the 1 Thursday. The June meeting will focus on
Senior Safety - Preventing elder abuse and scams. Commissioners Swanson and Buesgens will
represent the commission at the Triad meetings.
3. A county wide senior commission meeting is being planned for either Spring or Fall.
4. The County is planning a Senior Aging Summit. Elected officials and City Managers will be
invited. Information will focus on community profile. The intention is to invite the state
demographer as well. The meeting is planned for late Summer at the Arboretum.
UPDATE ON GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
1. Volunteer and support city events and local organizations (Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Beyond
the Yellow Ribbon, Arbor Day, 4th of July, Senior Picnic, etc.)
2. Continue to advocate different forms of transit and build on the Carver County efforts to promote
safe driving.
3. Mentor, participate and educate future generations through programs such as the Capstone Project
(work with Goddard School, reach out to high school seniors, invite children to the senior center for
activities, etc.).
4. Complete a Strategic Plan which will be funded through the Minnesota Area Agency on Aging
(MAAA) Lifetime Communities Learning and Action Collaborative Grants.
5. Conduct a Universal Design educational workshop which will residents to retrofit and remain in
their homes longer.
6. Continue to be an active member of the TRIAD. TRIAD is a partnership between law enforcement,
the community and the senior citizen community all working together to keep our senior citizens
safe. The TRIAD program is coordinated through the Sheriff’s Reserve Program. The
implementation plan has three phases: The first phase includes meeting with senior citizen
commissions to provide brochures and contacts for the senior citizen community. The Carver
County Sheriff’s Office TRIAD program will help provide presenters and support for events. The
second phase includes proactive coordination of events and topics for discussion through the Carver
County Sheriff’s Office TRIAD Program; the third phase includes conducting large-scale events
e.g. County-wide personal safety, home security or traffic safety seminars.
ARBOR DAY INVITATION:
This year’s tree planting event will take place at Ridley Ridge Park on Saturday, May 3, 2014. The
Environmental Commission issued a special invitation to the Senior Commission to attend the event.

CARFIT: The event will be held on May 2 as part of the 55 Alive Program.
ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Tipton moved, seconded by Swanson to adjourn the meeting. All
voted in favor and the motion carried.
