2013 05 17 CHANHASSEN SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING MAY 17, 2013 Chairwoman Nevin called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Nevin, Camille Swanson, Carole Buesgens, Dorina A. Tipton, Thomas Wilson, Jacqueline Prescott, Terry Grathen. MEMBERS ABSENT: Jackie Engel STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen Al-Jaff, Sue Bill VISITORS: Lenny Schmidt APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Tipton moved to approve the agenda. Commissioner Swanson seconded the motion to approve the agenda. All voted in favor and the motion carried. th APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Tipton moved to approve the minutes of the April 19 meeting. Commissioner Prescott seconded the motion to approve the agenda. All voted in favor and the motion carried. JOINT MEETING WITH CITY COUNCIL: Chairwoman Nevin and Commissioner Swanson noted City Councilman Jerry McDonald’s offer to assist the Senior Commission with the Strive program (part of the Capstone Project included in the Senior Commission strategic plan). The Senior Commission plans to contact Councilman McDonald during the summer for assistance with the Fall program. ARBOR DAY UPDATE: Chairwoman Nevin noted that the event was enjoyable despite the poor weather, which affected Arbor Day attendance. TRIAD – CROSSWALK SAFETY UPDATE: The TRIAD Crosswalk Safety Update workshop is nd scheduled for Wednesday, May 22 at the Chanhassen Arboretum. Lenny Schmidt indicated that between thirty and forty people have registered. Lenny Schmidt invited commissioners to submit additional workshop topics for consideration in the Fall. TRIAD is working with law enforcement to build proactive communications with seniors regarding three key prevention topics: Accidents, Medical Emergencies, Frauds and Scams. TRIAD is developing “meeting in a box” materials that will allow law enforcement to present education workshops at schools, churches, senior residential homes and other organizations. Doug Foot from the Chaska Fire Department is working with TRIAD to raise awareness for the Vial of Life and File of Life programs. TRIAD is rolling out an MED program that combines the File of Life with an automotive version, allowing individuals to keep important medical information in both their cars and in their homes, with appropriate notification stickers for each. TRIAD is working with senior residential communities to raise awareness, and would like also to raise awareness of seniors living independently in their own homes. STRATEGIC PLAN: The Chanhassen Senior Commission strategic planning meeting will take place on st Tuesday, May 21 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Consultant Linda Cole will facilitate. TH JULY 4 BINGO EVENT: The City Council has approved the Senior Commission collection for the Wounded Warrior program at the 10:00 a.m. to noon bingo event. Bingo will take place in its own tent located by the City of Chanhassen tent. Chairwoman Nevin has volunteered to have her office staff call for prizes. Chairwoman Nevin and Comissioners Swanson and Grathen volunteered to assist. st SENIOR PICNIC: The Chanhassen Senior Picnic will take place on Friday, June 21 at Lake Ann. The Lions are seeking volunteers to assist with serving and clean up. Commissioners Swanson, Grathen and Prescott volunteered. Others are also welcome to volunteer, by contacting Lions vice president Sue Ries at 952-303-4727 or sueries@hotmail.com. SENIOR COMMISION COMMENTS: th On Sunday June 9 the Lake Ann shelter will be renamed and dedicated as the Al Klingelhutz Memorial Pavilion. Sue Bill requested volunteers to assist with serving at the event. Sue will send additional event details to the commissioners via email. th The September 20 Senior Commission will include a joint meeting with the Chanhassen Advisory Board to discuss updates to the Thriver program. There will be a June mini-retreat between the Advisory Board and the Senior Center to update the plan. The Advisory Board would like to share the plan update with the Senior Commission in September. th Commissioners are invited to participate in the Chanhassen Memorial Day celebration on May 27. Mayor Tom Furlong will speak beginning at noon, at the Chanhassen City Center Park Plaza. Additional details are available on the City’s website. Sue Bill invited the Senior Commission to sample meals offered by the CAP Agency Senior Nutrition / Chanhassen Senior Center, so that Senior Commissioners have an opportunity to experience the meals endorsed by the commission. Chairwoman Nevin invited commissioners to participate in serving dinner to a local family as part of the th 2013 Beyond the Yellow Ribbon outreach. The dinner will be served to an Excelsior family on June 18. Chairwoman Nevin will coordinate the volunteers, who will meet at the Chanhassen City Council building at 5:00 p.m. Chairwoman Nevin will pick up pizza donated by Papa John’s. Commissioner Tipton will bring a salad. Commissioners Swanson and Wilson also volunteered. th Commissioners are encouraged to participate in the July 18 “Evening with the Mayor,” where they can enjoy a picnic dinner as well as an update from Mayor Furlong. The dinner will take place at the Chanhassen Senior Center. Advanced registration is required. Details are available at the Chanhassen Senior Center website. Both the Minnesota House and Senate have passed the Caregiver Sick Leave Bill, allowing Minnesota employees to take sick leave in order to care for parents and spouses. Governor Dayton will review the Bill ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Tipton moved, seconded by Swanson to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
