SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES
REGULAR MEETING
MARCH 16, 2012
Chairwoman Nevin called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Nevin, Virginia Prior, Carol Buesgens,
Pat McGough, Terry Grathen, and Thomas Wilson.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Naomi Moe.
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen Al-Jaff.
VISITORS: Katy Boone.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Buesgens moved to approve
the agenda. Commissioner Grathen seconded the motion to approve the
agenda. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
CARFIT: Staff provided an update on the event and informed the
Commission that the event will take place on May 23, 2012 at the
Chanhassen Fire Station. The Fire Department has been very cooperative
and accommodating.
JOINT MEETING WITH THE CITY COUNCIL – APRIL 9, 2012:
The following are the Senior Commission’s Accomplishments, Goals and Objectives for
2012:
1. Third annual CarFit program, May, 23, 2012. CarFit is an educational program that
offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit"
them. The Senior Commission works in partnership with the Chanhassen Crime
Prevention Specialist, Carver County Office of Aging and Carver County Sherriff’s
Department. This program has been expanded county wide and four additional cities
will be holding this event.
2. Volunteer and support city events and local organizations (Memorial Day, Veterans

Day, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, Arbor Day, 4 of July, etc.)
3. Continue to advocate different forms of transit.
4. Install a minimum of three Senior Parking signs at Public Buildings.
5. Mentor and educate future generations through programs such as the Capstone
Project.
ARBOR DAY: The event will take place on May 5, 2012, at Lake Ann Park.
Chairwoman Nevin encouraged the commissioners to attend the event.
UDATE BY KATEY BOONE: Boone announced that she has been
promoted to a Public Health Planning and Promotion Unit Supervisor. Soon,
she will delegate the commission meeting attendance to another staff member.
Carver County is planning a Transportation conference for June. The current
population of 65+ in Carver County is 7,000. In 2030, there will be 24,000.
Things that need to be examined include:
Road situation in the county
Drivers in term of medical changes
Changes with cars
Roll of sheriff and family with older drivers
What are the alternatives and what kind of programs are available
If places are walkable…
ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Buesgens moved, Chairwoman Nevin
seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion
carried.
