8-19-2011SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 19, 2011 Chairwoman Nevin called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Nevin, Virginia Prior, Carol Buesgens, Terry Grathen, Pat McGough, Naomi Moe and Thomas Wilson. MEMBERS ABSENT: None. STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen Al-Jaff, Sue Bill. VISITORS: Katy Boone, Carver County Office of Aging, Public Health Planner; Emily Mattran, Career Resource Manager/Career Specialist/District 112; and Lynn Murphy, Program Manager with Rebuilding Together Twin Cities. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Prior moved to approve the agenda. Commissioner McGough seconded the motion to approve the agenda. All voted in favor and the motion carried. APPROVAL OF MINUTES DATED JULY 15 17, 2011: Commissioner Moe moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner Grathen seconded the motion to approve the minutes. All voted in favor and motion carried. UPDATE ON INTERGENERATIONAL GOAL- DISCUSSION WITH EMILY MATTRAN, CAREER RESOURCE MANAGER/CAREER SPECIALIST/DISTRICT 112: Commissioner McGough invited Emily Mattran, Career Resource Manager/Career Specialist/District 112 to attend the Senior Commission meeting. Mattran is the bridge person. She communicates with the community, faculty and students. Teachers will back in September; however, they will be at a workshop group. It is more realistic to discuss the matter with them after a few weeks. She will have an update with for the commission in October. Class of 2013 will have to complete a capstone project. The program will begin with an intro, followed by intermediate, and ends with a capstone. There will be over 600 graduates per year. It was decided that the commission will form a subcommittee. Sue Bill can be a contact. The commission decided to meet on a Thursday at Perkins. PRESENTATION BY LYNN MURPHY, PROGRAM MANAGER WITH REBUILDING TOGETHER TWIN CITIES: Murphy explanined that the mission of Rebuilding Together Twin Cities is to bring volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners. They provide no-cost home repairs for homeowners in need, particularly older adults, individuals living with disabilities and families with children. This service ensures that these homeowners live independently in homes that are safe. Murphy is visiting senior commissions with in Carver County to make them aware of the program. UPDATE ON DINNER WITH THE MAYOR: Dinner with the Mayor was well attended. Chairwoman Nevin, Commissioners Buesgens and McGough attended the dinner. Mayor Furlong acknowledged the Senior Commission and credited them with starting the CarFit program in Chanhassen. UPDATE FROM KATY BOONE: Katy Boone informed the commission that Lavonne Gilbertson is leaving Carver County and retiring which will be a big loss. She gave an update on CarFit through the county. Four cities will be holding the event. Ridgeview will provide the Occupational Therapists. Sheriff Jim Olson has decided to move the TRI-ED program forward. SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: The Senior Center will be closed between September 6 and October 10 due to construction in the parking lot. ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Grathen moved, Commissioner Wilson seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
