A CarFit pilot project took place in Chanhassen on September 15, 2010. This event was a success and has been scheduled again for May 18, 2011. CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them. The Senior Commission worked in partnership with the Chanhassen Crime Prevention Specialist, Carver County Office of Aging and Carver County Sherriff’s Department. This program has been expanded county wide and four additional cities will be holding this event. 2. Educate future generations on issues related to seniors. 3. Educate seniors on the basics of the Health Care Bill. 4. Mentor future generations through the STRIVE program. 5. Install a minimum of three Senior Parking signs at Public Buildings. 6. Transit is an ongoing goal for the commission. The BEACON Council is currently working with Scott and Carver Counties to assess transit needs and identify gaps, especially for the elderly and persons with disabilities. The counties are well served by transit links to the Twin Cities area for the commuter population but lack mobility options between the two counties. NOMINATION FOR THE CHANHASSEN ROTARY’S 2011 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD: Staff requested nominations to be submitted by the end of the meeting. The Senior Commission nominated Mark Undestad for the Distinguished Service Award. CarFit: The actual event will take place on May 18, 2011. Training for technicians and coordinators from Victoria, Waconia, Watertown, and Norwood will take place on March 25th, 2011 at the old Public Works Building. Lifelong Housing Design: On March 14, 2011, staff attended a Smart House exhibit at the Goldstein Museum Gallery, McNeal Hall, Saint Paul Campus. The exhibit was built around the question of “Where do you want to live when you grow older?” For many people, the answer is "at home." This exhibition explores the housing trend of "aging in place" through the development of new products that allow people to stay in their homes through the use of adaptive technologies and simple adjustments to the existing domestic environments. Generation Ageless: The Senior Commission discussed some of the trends that were presented in the book Generation Ageless. They expressed an interest in continuing this discussion at a future meeting. ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Moe moved, Chairwoman Nevin seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
