REGULAR MEETING
MAY 13, 2011
Chairwoman Nevin called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Nevin, Virginia Prior, Carol Buesgens,
Pat McGough, Naomi Moe and Terry Grathen, Thomas Wilson.
MEMBERS ABSENT: None.
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen Al-Jaff, Sue Bill.
VISITORS: None.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Wilson moved to approve the
agenda. Commissioner Moe seconded the motion to approve the agenda.
All voted in favor and the motion carried.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES DATED APRIL 15, 2011: Commissioner
McGough moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner Moe seconded the
motion. All voted in favor and motion carried.
CARFIT: Staff provided an update on the event and informed the
Commission that the event will take place on May 18, 2011. Commissioner
McGough stated that she wanted to volunteer for the event. Commissioners
Buesgens, Prior and Moe also volunteered for the event.
DINNER WITH THE MAYOR: Dinner with the Mayor will take place at
the Senior Center prior to a concert in the park. The event will take place on
July 25, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. Cost for the event is $8.00.
UPDATE ON ARBOR DAY: The event was very successful. It took place
at Lake Ann Park on May 7, 2011. Chairwoman Nevin attended the tree
planting on behalf of the Senior Commission and was acknowledged by
Mayor Furlong. Twenty trees were planted.
UDATE ON INTERGENERATIONAL GOAL: Commissioner
McGough stated that the High School is out but will start planning for the
next year. Some of the ideas that were discussed included:
• The Chamber of Commerce selects students to mentor.
• The Commission may consider attending Career Day at the
school.
• Send an invitation to the students to attend a Senior
Commission meeting to understand the role the Commission
plays in government.
• Commissioners think of ways to gain the interest of the younger
generation.
• Ask the younger generation to offer computer classes.
SENIOR CENTER EVENTS-SUMMER PICNIC: The senior Center will
be showing the movie Love of Car: Transportation as We Age before the
CarFit event. The Lions Club will be hosting the summer picnic.
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: The Senior Commission directed
staff to further look into educational sessions on the health bill. Staff will
contact the Vital Aging to offer Chanhassen as a location for them to host a
forum.
ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Wilson moved, Commissioner Moe
seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion
carried.
