During the early years of the Chanhassen 4th of July Celebration, a “Duck Soup” softball tournament was played at Lake Ann Park where players ran bases backwards. In 1986, the first street dance was held, which featured the band “The Stingrays”. The Stingrays eventually changed their name to the “Hi Tops,” who played for many years until CBO started their tradition of playing at the celebration each July 3rd. Through the years, many fun events were incorporated into the schedule of events including sailboard and fishing demos, inner tube relays, hot air balloon rides, the NASA flight simulator Spaceball, rollerblade demos, canoe races, and in 1990, 67 runners carried the Olympic Torch 8 miles through the City of Chanhassen. The annual parade as we know it today began in 1996, which marked Chanhassen’s Centennial. Many other centennial events were incor- porated in the annual celebration, including a melodrama based on Chanhassen’s history, a petting zoo, and Centennial books and clothing. The community sold “Save the Depot Bricks” to re-locate the historic train depot back into town, where it sits today next to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. As the annual celebration continued to grow, more events were added such as the carnival, additional entertainment, water wars, the ever so popular Rotary Club of Chanhassen’s Beer and Wine Garden, Taste of Chanhassen, Classic Car Show, and the 4th of July Parade, also produced by the Rotary Club. While the 2020 4th of July Celebration looks different than the large-scale festival that many are used to, the City and our event partners and sponsors are excited to present an abbreviated schedule of events for you, family and friends to enjoy from home. We hope to bring the celebration back to downtown Chanhassen in the future, as soon as it is safe to do so. Happy Fourth of July!
