2005 Playground Replacement Projects
The 2005 playground replacement project includes the replacement,
refurbishment or removal of eight playgrounds. This initiative represents one of
the largest and most visible capital park projects undertaken by the community in
the past five years. A great deal of work has been accomplished to date and a
good deal of work remains. I would like to provide the Commission with the
following. update. This report is generally organized in chronological order.
CURRY FARMS PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT
Curry Farms organized a neighborhood group to select and install their
playground. In addition, the committee worked on the relocation of the
playground to "higher" ground within the park. This necessitated the removal of
a ballfield diamond, but ample green space remains to playa pick-up game of
ball. This being said, the entire park was inundated with 3 - 4 feet of runoff water
during the recent big rain event. A neighborhood install was held on
June 18 and 19 and proved to be very successful. An outside contractor
completed the concrete border and city crews installed the resilient wood fiber
material. Public works crews have initiated a filling operation bringing dozens of
loads of clay and black dirt into the park to level out the existing "sink hole." Wet
weather has temporarily terminated this operation but we anticipate completion
during the month of October. Mike Crist, Eagle Scout candidate, is completing
the installation of two park benches and six trees this coming Saturday at the park.
Upon conclusion of the filling operation and Mike's work, maintenance crews
will complete site restoration, sodding and seeding. An access trail and park
benches will also be installed.
NORTH LOTUS LAKE PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT
North Lotus Lake organized a neighborhood group to select and install their
playground. The "footprint" of the new playground was increased considerably,
necessitating the relocation of two adjacent trees. The trees were picked up by a
tree spade and moved 15 feet to the south. A neighborhood install was held on
June 24 and 25 and proved to be very successful. An outside contractor
completed the concrete border and city crews installed the resilient wood fiber
material. An access trail and park benches remain to be installed. Maintenance

crews will complete site restoration, sodding and seeding by the end of the
construction season.
RICE MARSH LAKE PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT
Rice Marsh Lake organized a neighborhood group to select and install their
playground. The playground pad was elevated at this location to maximize
drainage from the container. A neighborhood install was held on July 8 and 9 and
proved to be very successful. An outside contractor completed the concrete
border and city crews installed the resilient wood fiber material. Items remaining
to be installed include a small access trail and park benches. Maintenance crews
will complete site restoration, sodding and seeding by the end of the construction
season.
CHANHASSEN HILLS PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT
Chanhassen Hills organized a neighborhood group to select and install their
playground. A second container location for a toddler's playground was sited
just across the trail from the existing playground. A neighborhood install for both
new playgrounds was held on July 29 and 30 and proved to be very successful.
An outside contractor completed the concrete border and city crews installed the
resilient wood fiber material. Access trails and park benches remain to be
installed. Maintenance crews will complete site restoration, sodding and seeding
by the end of the construction season.
MINNEW ASHT A HEIGHTS PARK PLAYGROUND REFURBISHMENT
Earl F. Anderson Inc., a playground company, was hired to refurbish the existing
playground at Minnewashta Heights Park. Half of the existing playground (all
wood components) was removed and disposed of by city crews. EFA brought
portions of the old Rice Marsh Lake Park playground that matched the remaining
equipment to the site. Lastly, the city purchased a complement of new equipment
to round out the updated playground plan. The main play structure was
completed in late August. Since that time, a concrete border has been installed
and we anticipate spreading resilient wood fiber material in the next few days.
Restoration, sodding and seeding will follow.
LAKE SUSAN PARK PLAYGROUND
The old playground was cleared from the park the week of August 15. The
existing playground pad was regraded and enlarged to the west and south. A
second pad for a toddler playground was constructed directly west of the existing
playground. The two new structures are on order from Little Tikes Commercial

Play Equipment with an expected delivery date of October 1. Base rock is
currently being placed on site. Framing and pouring of the expansive concrete
slabs and sidewalks required to contain and support the play structure will follow.
Pouring of the rubber resilient material is a temperature sensitive process. It is
our current plan to move forward with both the installation of equipment and
poured-in-place rubber mat yet this fall. However, if we sense that the timing is
not right, we may recommend postponing the installation of this structure until
early spring.
CARVER BEACH PARK PLAYGROUND REFURBISHMENT
Earl F. Anderson Inc. was also hired to refurbish the existing playground at
Carver Beach Park. Half of the existing playground (all wood components) w.as
removed and disposed of by city crews. EF A will bring to the site portions of the
Chanhassen Hills Park playground that matches the remaining equipment. Lastly,
the city purchased a complement of new equipment to round out the updated
playground plan. We anticipate that EFA will be on site completing their portion
of the work over the next four weeks. The concrete border will be installed and
city crews will complete site restoration, sodding and seeding.
BANDIMERE HEIGHTS PARK PLA YGROUND REMOVAL
Bandimere Heights Park and its existing playground were in place prior to the
development of Bandimere Community Park. With the construction of two new
playgrounds in the community park, it is not necessary to replace the outdated
equipment at Bandimere Heights Park. The wood playground and border at the
smaller park will be removed within the next few weeks. The area will be
backfilled with black dirt and seeded.
EXCESS EQUIPMENT SALE
All of the playgrounds removed over the past few years did not meet safety
guidelines. Therefore the playground structures themselves could not be sold or
donated. However, some of the individual play components, namely molded
plastic slides, will be sold on the afternoon of Thursday, October 1, 2005. City
staff will be conducting a sealed bid sale of not only playground components, but
a variety of excess office, maintenance and computer equipment. The sale will be
held outside the maintenance building at Lake Ann Park. Look for an upcoming
advertisement in local papers.
