The publication of this biannual map is widely anticipated by our residents and businesses. On May 23, we delivered a copy of the 2006 map to all 9,000 mailing addresses within our community. The response to this year's design and artwork has been overwhelmingly positive. I hope you agree that the feature advertisement of Bokoo Bikes on the front of the map is well worth your contribution towards its publication. In addition to the mailed copies, we have an additional supply of 3,000 maps. for distribution at your store, city hall, and the Chanhassen Recreation Center. Our community is blessed with a growing and supportive business community. By your actions, you distinguish Bokoo Bikes as one of the premier community- minded organizations within our community. Please pass my thanks onto your entire staff. Again, on behalf of the entire City Council, thank you for your generous sponsorship! Sincerely" ~ " ~~. PAUL, MINNESOTAI Last update: May 26, 2006 - 1 :44 PM New wrinkle in fitness Growing old isn't what it used to be. Boomers aren't shuffling into their golden years, they're running, skiing, biking, swimming. Story and Photos By Darlene Prois ., Star Tribune Patricia Amidon doesn't think of herself as an athlete. Running is all she does, she says, and she didn't even start until she was 51. She's 71 now, with more than two dozen marathons under her feet. The St. Paul woman ran her usual two last year, finishing them in just over five hours, nearly half an hour faster than she did four years ago. Amidon has discovered the regenerative power of exercise. Hard, sweaty exercise. And she's not alone: thousands of adults 50 or older are joining health clubs, running races, taking up new sports or rediscovering ones they'd once excelled at. With empty nests and careers in perspective or behind them, they have time __ and money -- to spend taking care of themselves. There's even a new magazine that celebrates these aging athletes. "GeezerJock" heralds the competitive athlete 40 and up, and it's grown a circulation of 75,000 in just one year, an almost unheard-of feat in the competitive magazine business. Current books caution that the quest for eternal youth is not easy. One popular title, "Younger Next Year --How to Live Like You're 50 -- Until You're 80 and Beyond," advises readers to start exercising and not stop. It's been selling so well that the authors, 71-year old Chris Crowley (who looks and functions like a fit 50-year old) and his doctor, Henry S. Lodge, published another book for women this year. Doctors applaud the trend Exercise is one of the best ways to maintain healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels and keep weight under control, said Dr. Eric Tangalos, an internal medicine and geriatric specialist at the Mayo Clinic. "I often get the complaint from someone who is 50 or 60 who says if I had known I would live this long I would have taken better care of myself," said the 56-year old doctor. "I tell them that it's never too late." He advises anyone under 70 to start an exercise program strenuous enough to make them sweat. Daily activity just won't cut it. "We've done a better job of communicating over the last 20 years the value of exercise," said Tangalos. "But the way our cities are put together aren't helping http://www.startribune.coml1244/v -print! story 1 457206.h tml 5/26/2006 New wnnkle In fitness us. "Those who are successful at aging have active lifestyles, avoid overeating and over-drinking. They have lifelong habits that include exercise, and usually they're couples." @2006 Star Tribune.
