REGULAR MEETING
SUMMARY MINUTES
JANUARY 23, 2007
Chairman Stolar called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m..
MEMBERS PRESENT: Glenn Stolar, Jack Spizale, Tom Kelly, Paula Atkins, Jeff Daniel, and
Steve Scharfenberg
STAFF PRESENT: Todd Hoffman, Park and Rec Director; and Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation
Superintendent
APPOINTMENT OF 2007 CHAIRPERSON AND VICE CHAIRPERSON.
Daniel moved, Kelly seconded to appoint Glenn Stolar as Chairman and Steve
Scharfenberg as Vice Chairman for 2007. All voted in favor and the motion carried
unanimously with a vote of 6 to O.
APPROV AL OF AGENDA: The agenda was amended to include a City Council update
under commission member presentations.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS: Chairman Stolar l}oted Daddy-Daughter Date Night was
coming up on February 9th and 10th.
VISITOR PRESENT A TIONS: None.
APPROV AL OF MINUTES: Spizale moved, Scharfenberg seconded to approve the
verbatim and summary Minutes of the Park and Recreation Commission meeting dated
December 12,2006, amended to reflect that Commissioner Daniel's comments were
actually made by Commissioner Scharfenberg. All voted in favor and the motion carried
unanimously with a vote of 6 to O.
RECOMMENDA TION CONCERNING APPROVAL OF 2007 LAKE ANN LIFEGUARD
CONTRACT.
Jerry Ruegemer presented the staff report on this item. Chairman Stolar asked for clarification
on the threshold for items going out to bid and if the contract dates can be extended in August.
Commissioner Atkins asked about the swimming lesson program.
Daniel moved, Scharfenberg seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission
recommends that the City Council approve the two year contract from Minnetonka
Community Education and Services (MCES) in the amount of $28,490 for 2007 and
$29,915 for 2008 to provide lifeguard services at Lake Ann Beach for the 2007/2008
seasons. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 6 to O.

BIENNUAL COMMUNITY SURVEY. RECOMMEND PARK AND RECREATION
QUESTIONS.
Todd Hoffman presented the staff report on this item and asked that the commission come up
with questions to send to the City Council for consideration in the survey. Commissioner Atkins
suggested a question about performing arts space in Chanhassen. Commissioner Kelly stated he
would like to know if the public was willing to support a referendum for the acquisition of
additional athletic fields and a golf course. Commissioners Daniel and Spizale suggested asking
a question about the community's interest in expanding Lake Susan to accommodate a town
baseball team. Commissioner Scharfenberg suggested asking for input on additional amenities
people would like to see at the Chanhassen Recreation Center. Chairman Stolar suggested
coming up with a closed ended question combining all of the suggestion, asking the public to
prioritize and whether or not they would support a referendum. Commissioner Atkins asked that
her question be more generalized to ask about interest in the formation of an arts council and/or
historical preservation society in Chanhassen.
RECREA TION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2007 FEBRUARY FESTIV AL. Jerry Ruegemer provided an update and schedule of events for
February Festival.
2007 ICE SKATING RINK REPORT. Jerry Ruegemer provided an update on the ice skating
rinks.
SELF SUPPORTING PROGRAMS: 3-0N-3 ADULT BASKETBALL LEAGUE. Jerry
Ruegemer updated the commission on this item.
COMMISSION MEMBER PRESENT A TIONS: Chairman Stolar provided an update on the
January 23rd City Council meeting in which the Minnetonka Lacrosse Association presented a
check to the city for the use of the Instant Web field, and discussed the realignment of 101 and
it's impact on Bandimere Park. Todd Hoffman provided an update on the plans for City Center
Park.
ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET: Commissioner Daniel asked for an update on the property
damage at Lake Ann Park. Todd Hoffman pointed out the Life Long Learning Classes being
offered by Augsburg College in the Senior Center.
Scharfenberg moved, Kelly seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the
motion carried. The Park and Recreation Commission meeting was adjourned.
