1975-07-24 minutes Bicentennial Commission Minutes
July 24 , 1975
Chanhassen City Hall
The regular meeting of the Bicentennial Commission was called to order
by Chairman Walter Hobbs on July 24, 1975 at 7 :45 p.m. The following
members were present: Rich Lyman, Myrna Kurvers , Mariana Shulstad
and Walt Hobbs. Martin Jones, Fr. Armand Lubanski and Lyle Ricklefs
were absent. Harry Pauly, Joe Betz, Martha Lyman, Cheryl Hobbs ,
Betty Naber, Mr. 6 Mrs. Tom Lenzmeier, Mr. 6 Mrs. Cliff Wiedman,
C. Jameston and Kurt Schmid were also present.
MINUTES: A motion was made by Rich Lyman and seconded by Mariana
Shulstad to approve the June 26 , 1975 minutes with the following
amendments: Under Tree Planting replace "Norwegion" with "Norway."
Under Fund Raising replace 'resubmit" with "submit. " Motion carried.
FUND RAISER AND THEATRE NIGHT: Jerry Sandro was present from the Chan-
hassen Dinner Theatre to discuss their program for benefit performances.
He distributed printed literature and answered questions from the
commission. The members felt that the project, i.e. Restoration of; the
Old Village Hall, should be finalized before deciding on a definite fund
raising program. This topic will be on the August 14 , 1975 agenda.
Mr. Sandro's presentation was concise and complete and the Commission .
thanked him for coming.
DISCUSSION ON RENOVATION OF VILLAGE HALL: The floor was open for dis-'
`.. cussion on the proposed renovation of the Old Village Hall. Mr. Harry .
Pauly concurs with the feeling of the Central, Business District
Committee in that he does not feel that the Old Village Hall should
be restored on the original site as it would better be suited for
parking. Although the Central Business District Concept plan shows
small office buildings in this area, Mr. Pauly 'felt that the CBD
would like to see this amended to facilitate parking. The others `.
present were in favor of the restoration on the original site. Several
of these represented the Historical Society. Mrs . Naber stated that
the State Historical Society had indicated that Chanhassen's Hall
is unique and not just another old building. The presence of the
jail within the hall is the main reason for this.
Mr. Pauly suggested that the Commission appear 'before the Chamber. of
Commerce with a sketch plan on the project. This was agreed to and
an effort will be made to attend the July 31," 1975 meeting. Rich '<;'
Lyman will contact Jerry Baily and Associates for plans .
Walt Hobbs pointed out that the CBD, Chamber of Commerce, Planning
Commission, Park and Recreation Commission, City Council , Planner,
Administrator and Historical Society had been invited to the meeting end
with the exception of the Historical Society the response was
disappointing.
TREE PLANTING: Rich Lyman had contacted another source of supply and
felt that Riney Nursery was much more competative. The program will . ;
be finalized at the August 14, 1975 meeting.
